Being prepared and taking at least photos before hurricane season is a must here in Florida.

Being prepared and taking at least photos before hurricane season is a must here in Florida.

Remembering Hurricane Ian - On September 28, 2022, Hurricane Ian made landfall in Southwest Florida, leaving behind devastation that is hard to put into words.

For those of us who were there in the days and months that followed, the memories are still very real. We saw entire communities changed, families who had lost everything, and people trying to figure out how they were going to put their homes and their lives back together.

We also saw neighbors helping neighbors and communities coming together.

Florida’s public adjusters went to work, helping policyholders through what would become a very long recovery for many families. Four years later, some of the lessons from Ian, and some of the struggles, are still with us.

Today we remember the lives lost, the families affected and the communities of Southwest Florida that endured so much.

A secret report shows which Florida insurers claimed losses as affiliates made billions. The state Senate demanded the Orlando Sentinel and Sun Sentinel destroy the report or face legal action.

CLAIM MYTH vs. CLAIM REALITY — WEEK 7

A lot of homeowners are surprised to learn this one.

MYTH: Flood damage is covered by your homeowners insurance.
REALITY: Most homeowners policies do not cover flooding. You generally need a separate flood insurance policy for that protection.

And here’s the part that’s really important — don’t wait until there’s a storm headed our way to think about flood insurance.

Flood insurance typically has a 30-day waiting period before coverage takes effect. So when you see a storm forming and decide it might be time to get covered, it could already be too late.

We live in Florida. It doesn’t always take a hurricane to cause serious flooding. Heavy rain can be enough. Take a look at your coverage now. Ask questions. Find out what is covered and what isn’t.

Because the worst time to find out you don’t have coverage is when there’s already water in your home.

Why you need a translator for your own insurance policy

When you tell your insurance company there is "flooding" in your basement, you mean there is water everywhere. But in "insurance speak," if that water came from a pipe and not a rising river, using the word "flood" could accidentally get your entire claim denied!

Insurance language is a total minefield. One minor miscommunication can cost you thousands of dollars out of pocket. That is one example of why you don't fight them alone. Hiring a qualified public insurance adjuster means you have a licensed expert who speaks their secret language, handles the confusing paperwork, and fights to get you every single penny you are actually owed.

The Bottom Line: Don’t let a vocabulary mix-up cost you your home restoration. Hire an expert who represents you, not the insurance company! Find yours at getreadyflorida.com
