Originally called Decoration Day, the United States has been recognizing Memorial Day since the aftermath of the Civil War, holding the first observance at Arlington National Cemetery in 1868. According to numerous sources, the latter part of May was chosen because of the availability of spring flowers used for decorating the graves of fallen soldiers. A driving force under the earliest observances was General John A. Logan who was born in the southern Illinois town of Murphysboro.

After a century of observances under various resolutions, Memorial Day formally became a federal holiday under the Uniform Holiday Act of 1968.

As you celebrate the beginning of summer this holiday weekend, we encourage you to remember the somber reason behind Memorial Day and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.

We will be closed Monday in observance of the day and will reopen Tuesday, May 26th, at 7am.

This fall, we will recognize Paducah Power System's 65th anniversary. If you have any old pictures of our facilities, and staff at work and would be willing to share those with us, we'd love to have a copy of those in preparation for that anniversary. We're particularly interested in images from those earliest years (1961and later). You can reach out to us through FB Messenger or at [email protected].

Max Hampton rolled into Paducah Power System in a Ford Maverick as a 19-year-old with long hair in January of 1979. He started as an Apprentice Lineman and worked his way up to Foreman, staying with us until his retirement.

He passed away last Thursday, and his family will lay him to rest tomorrow.

We are grateful for him and his service to Paducah Power and this community. He was the lead on a crew that gave up time with their families Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and the days following in December 1998 to restore power to people in Tennessee following an ice storm there, so like all linemen, his work touched those beyond his home utility, too, many times.

PADUCAH POWER SYSTEM BOARD SELECTS NEW CEO

The Paducah Power System (PPS) Board of Directors today promoted Cory Hicks as the utility’s new Chief Executive Officer to replace retiring CEO Dave Carroll. Hicks has served since last July as Paducah Power’s Chief Strategy Officer.

“Dave’s incredible leadership of PPS for the last nine years has positioned the utility well and significantly elevated our standing in the utility industry. My goal is to build upon that and proactively prepare us for growth and the challenges of our evolving industry,” said Hicks.

Prior to Hicks’ arrival at PPS, he served as the Chief Strategy and Business Officer for Four Rivers Nuclear Partnership, Deputy Business Services Director for Fluor Federal Services and Chief of Staff for former Congressman Ed Whitfield in Washington, D.C. He will begin his CEO role at PPS July 1st.

Hicks serves on the Board of Directors for Baptist Health Systems and Paducah Bank as well as the Governor appointed Kentucky Nuclear Energy Development Authority.

Carroll came to PPS in 1998, serving as Business Director, Finance Director, and, for nearly a decade, CEO. His tenure at the helm of the utility has resulted in extensive recognition for PPS within the utility industry for reliability, safety, and operational excellence.

“I appreciate the opportunity given to me by the Board of Directors to lead during the past nine years and especially the hard work of our staff. I’m proud of the reputation, collectively, we’ve built within the industry. People know who we are because of our record, and that has opened doors to opportunities key to our strong financial footing,” said Carroll.

Carroll pointed to measures taken in recent years to reduce debt, stabilize rates, and sell excess power capacity to other Kentucky communities as examples of those opportunities.
Carroll said, “I’m particularly proud of the way we’ve been resourceful with our power generating assets to broker capacity/energy contracts with Henderson, Kentucky and the eleven cities in the Kentucky Municipal Energy Agency to provide them with a stable and cost- effective energy path while better matching our resources with our own needs. These types of deals have been and will continue to be important as Paducah Power faces rate and supply pressures that will multiply in our industry in the coming years.”

Carroll has served as the chair of the Board of Directors for both the Prairie State Generating Campus and American Municipal Power, General Manager of the Kentucky Municipal Power Agency and a member of the Board of Directors for the American Public Power Association.

What a great morning!

We did have a brief but widespread outage this morning due to a transmission issue in our connectivity to Kentucky Utilities. While power is back up, there are a few lingering small issues that resulted, and we are working on those. This means there are some traffic lights that will have to be reset by the agencies that control those lights, so be careful at intersections.

Paducah-McCracken County 911 is nearing the end of a multi-million dollar overhaul of its system. That overhaul includes new equipment and upgraded digital technology, redundancy, and better coverage throughout the community. The modernization is meant to improve communication between emergency responders and resilience of the system during disasters.

Our fiber network is a part of that project. We are currently running fiber to the city’s radio tower in the West End to enhance radio communications in that part of the area. Our fiber was already available at the other tower sites.

Our service crews in Nashville have worked all over the city these past five days. And when we say all over, we mean ALL over. They are handling those issues that affect one or two homes at a time, those last outages affecting Nashville Electric's customers. The utility has whittled their massive outage numbers down to 2,262 customers without electricity. The work continues until everyone has power again.
