Water on your property is crucial for supporting and maintaining healthy populations of all wildlife. Not only does easy access to water benefit wildlife for drinking purposes, it also provides life for many beneficial plants and insects that support other wildlife as food. These small water holes also provide year round diverse buffets for quail which can get their water requirements from eating the insects and plant forage that thrive around the water. In the frequent droughts we experience in Texas, having constant year round water not only benefits your wildlife but keeps wildlife on your property during the toughest droughts.

Congratulations!!

Sneary Cattle Company was recognized as the First Place Conservation Rancher last week in George West at the Area 3 Conservation Awards Banquet.

Additionally, it was announced that they are the STATE WINNER for Conservation Rancher! What a great accomplishment for this family and for Matagorda County.

Sneary Cattle Company is Loy and Helen Sneary and their children - Adam and wife Alycia, and Shannon and husband Jim. They were nominated by the Matagorda County SWCD for implementing conservation best management practices on their operation, including such things as adaptive high stock density grazing, mechanical brush management, and livestock pipelines for water distribution. These practices help protect natural resources while supporting productive agricultural working lands.

Additionally, Sneary Cattle Company has worked closely with the Matagorda County SWCD for many years, and most recently assisted them with their 2024 Soil Health Field Day.

Congratulations to the Sneary family!

Restoring a client’s property with native grasses and beneficial wildflowers. This pasture was choked up with regrowth huisache and mesquite trees, prickly pear, and invasive johnson grass. While mesquite, huisache, and prickly pear cactus all are native and can benefit land in moderation, they can take over areas and choke out numerous other beneficial plants. Grubbing and bulldozing sendero strips through the pasture helped to remove portions of those choked up sections, while still leaving other sections of the pasture with thick escape cover for wildlife. These cleared out sendero strips were then seeded over heavily with a diverse mix of beneficial native grasses and wildflowers from These tough native plants will help to provide crucial sources of food and habitat to a variety of animals and insects, while also stabilizing the bare soil from erosion.

It’s hard to beat springtime in the Texas Hill Country. Aside from the bluebonnets and wildflowers, the Rio Grande Turkey may be the real star of the show. Spring is the breeding season for these turkeys, and you can often see them out strutting or hear them gobbling during this time.

A scouting camera at a watering hole on one of Trull Service Company’s managed properties picked up a chaotic fight between two coyotes and a raccoon. The raccoon was able to stand its ground and fight off the coyotes until they eventually left it alone. While raccoons are not a main source of prey for coyotes, coyotes are opportunistic predators and will take advantage of a variety of prey when given the chance. In this instance the coyotes bit off more than they could chew!
