Misery Loves Company
Regardless of the industry, the experience or education of managers, there is a common challenge facing organizations – too many managers need to be better at their jobs! Forget about the blame game; forget about all the whys and what-ifs and focus on solutions!
Last week I met with two perspective clients who shared similar stories about a challenge they are facing – “competency-deficient” managers. One person I met with was from a university and the other from a manufacturing firm – clearly different industries but almost identical stories about the fallout caused by this problem. The Dean of a college shared “I need a program chair to understand that they are the critical link between administration and their faculty!” The plant manager similarly said, “I need my front-line leaders to understand that they must serve two masters – the company and their employees!”
In these conversations I listened to a lot, ranging from complaints of millennials jumping ship because of “not connecting” with their supervisor as well as the angst of trying to get buy-in for change from tenured faculty. If I learned anything from these two meetings here it is:
1. Managers must learn more about what makes them tick! Looking in the mirror and seeing the good, the bad and the ugly and realizing “this is who I am and what I bring to the party.”
2. Knowing where the pot-holes and landmines are in the organization and learning how to navigate successfully.
3. People skills are the most important and underappreciated part of the role as a manager and if lacking, often leads to turnover and lost productivity.
4. New managers must be given the opportunity to learn quickly – taking their experiences and flexing these to their new position.
5. An important outcome is the manager’s ability to lead people to the successful completion of a daily project, a weekly assignment and beyond, realizing that there is no end as a manager, just an ongoing challenge of influencing and motivating people.
So please realize that your headaches and your challenges are not unique to you, your company or your industry. Hopefully by reading this you will realize that there are solutions that will work for your problems and they are not complicated. It is kind of like losing weight – dedication and perseverance to the uncomfortable reality as displayed on the digital read-out of that nasty scale. Yes, misery does love company!
