We believe that talent management is having the right people with the rights skills in the right jobs at the right time. The good the bad and the ugly – our dilemma with today’s interpersonal skills gap! When some of us were growing up in the “dark ages” proper manners, dressing for the occasion and participating in the “fine art of conversation” (except for those times when children were to be seen and not heard) was an expectation. This is not an attempt to reminisce, so much as it is a frame of reference. Each generation brings a new perspective with social norms constantly changing along with technological enhancements in everything we do. I’ve heard experts speak on the generation gap topic for over the past 20 years and some of us should reflect on how we were seen as a part of that gap at some point (try coming home in the early 1970s with long hair and a book written by Eldridge Cleaver to a conservative home!)
There is a great opportunity to look in our corporate mirrors and say “the problem is us!” I believe there are great solutions for addressing the lack of interpersonal skills in the workplace (a.k.a, “soft skills”, emotional intelligence,) many of which have been around for decades! The cost to identify, design, develop, implement and evaluate interpersonal skill development programs is minimal – especially with the absurdly high cost of doing nothing.
MadsenArcher Consulting is offering a complimentary (a.k.a. free) all day workshop on Friday, September 23 in the northwestern suburbs of Chicago. If you know of someone who could benefit from this program please contact me at [email protected] or 847.452.3068.

Watershed Opportunity?
I think it is fair to say that most of us are shocked, dismayed and curious as to the state of our current political quagmire! Sometimes it is hard, but necessary to look at what positive can come from any seemingly untenable situation. How do we make lemonade out of lemons when there is such disdain and disgust for the current political situation?
Maybe there are some lessons learned from industrial and organizational psychology. As early as the 1930’s organizations realized the effects of social relations, motivation and employee satisfaction on productivity. Why can’t our political parties learn from the past (and current) struggles our business community has faced? Our U.S. military made significant changes in the early 1960’s based on studies conducted at U.S. bases in Germany conducted in partnership with the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations. An outcome was improved communication and improved leadership and coherent decision-making.
Maybe there are great minds in the wings who are ready to change the fabric and current state of our divisive two party system. Does attacking personalities solve problems? Well, ask any student of basic management 101 and you will learn we must address issues and problems without attacking the person. Is it too much to ask our nation’s leaders to begin to act like leaders from our business world? I am optimistic that cool and calm minds will prevail and we will move forward after what sure seems like reaching bottom!

Misery Loves Company
Regardless of the industry, the experience or education of managers, there is a common challenge facing organizations – too many managers need to be better at their jobs! Forget about the blame game; forget about all the whys and what-ifs and focus on solutions!
Last week I met with two perspective clients who shared similar stories about a challenge they are facing – “competency-deficient” managers. One person I met with was from a university and the other from a manufacturing firm – clearly different industries but almost identical stories about the fallout caused by this problem. The Dean of a college shared “I need a program chair to understand that they are the critical link between administration and their faculty!” The plant manager similarly said, “I need my front-line leaders to understand that they must serve two masters – the company and their employees!”
In these conversations I listened to a lot, ranging from complaints of millennials jumping ship because of “not connecting” with their supervisor as well as the angst of trying to get buy-in for change from tenured faculty. If I learned anything from these two meetings here it is:
1. Managers must learn more about what makes them tick! Looking in the mirror and seeing the good, the bad and the ugly and realizing “this is who I am and what I bring to the party.”
2. Knowing where the pot-holes and landmines are in the organization and learning how to navigate successfully.
3. People skills are the most important and underappreciated part of the role as a manager and if lacking, often leads to turnover and lost productivity.
4. New managers must be given the opportunity to learn quickly – taking their experiences and flexing these to their new position.
5. An important outcome is the manager’s ability to lead people to the successful completion of a daily project, a weekly assignment and beyond, realizing that there is no end as a manager, just an ongoing challenge of influencing and motivating people.
So please realize that your headaches and your challenges are not unique to you, your company or your industry. Hopefully by reading this you will realize that there are solutions that will work for your problems and they are not complicated. It is kind of like losing weight – dedication and perseverance to the uncomfortable reality as displayed on the digital read-out of that nasty scale. Yes, misery does love company!
