Floor vibrations are becoming an increasingly important design challenge as more buildings are constructed (or remodeled) to contain vibration-sensitive occupancies. Some examples are fitness gyms, dance floors, biotech research facilities, micro- and nano-scale manufacturing facilities, medical occupancies (such as MRI, CAT scan, and micro-surgery suites), and data centers. In addition, building owners and tenants have developed a heightened awareness of, and lower tolerance for, floor vibrations that can be felt by humans. Thus, as structural engineers, we are now frequently called upon to design, or renovate, buildings to meet specific floor vibration criteria. This presentation provides an overview of what is common practice for limiting floor vibrations. The following topics will be addressed during the web seminar:
1. Code Requirements: Does 2024 IBC Section 1604.3 help with floor vibrations? What about ASCE 7-22 Appendix C (Serviceability Considerations)?
2. How to quantify floor vibrations.
3. Common floor vibration limits for human comfort, and for vibration-sensitive equipment.
4. Instruments and methods used to make field measurements of floor vibrations, and how to interpret the results of those measurements.
5. Guidelines for modeling and analysis of floor vibrations for new and existing structures, including practical limitations of some existing analysis methods.

The book is a combination of history; academic notes intended for use at the university level; design examples straight from actual jobs that we have designed; and practical applications and detailing intended for the practicing engineer.

Chapter 1 describes the history of post-tensioned concrete in the United States as only Ken Bondy can tell it.

Chapters 2 through 8 are currently the notes that Dirk Bondy uses to teach Design of Prestressed Concrete Structures at UCLA and Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

Chapters 9 through 13 are practical design examples in which we attempt to address many of the decisions faced by practicing engineers on typical projects, including proper computer analysis and modeling techniques.

Chapters 13 and 14 contain the true art of detailing and observing the construction of post-tensioned concrete.

This knowledge was obtained over many years of working on our own projects and from listening and learning from those who were the pioneers of post-tensioned concrete.

Nonstructural damage has accounted for the majority of damage observed in recent earthquakes in the United States. This seminar will clarify what non-structural components are, what the code requires in regards to seismic restraint, and will also discuss some of the significant changes that have been made to ASCE 7-22, as adopted in the 2024 IBC. Join us next Tuesday for a great webinar on Shear Friction Dowel Design for Concrete Diaphragms. Come learn the common mistakes engineers make when designing the slab-to-shear-wall connection.

This webinar will focus on the misconception of the design of the slab-to-shear-wall connection, specifically how the joint rebar is required to transfer all the diaphragm force at the level in question and the shear from the upper floors. It will address the shear friction connection from the shear wall to the foundation. Most engineers we review do not add rebar at the construction joint and use the vertical wall rebar for shear transfer (by default) and flexural resistance, which occur at the same time. They rarely perform the required design or acknowledge the two simultaneous forces. The webinar will also discuss that a “dowel” must cross the construction joint. Rebar in the slab, that does not cross between the wall and slab does not provide shear friction. This is a common detailing mistake.
