Undercuts are one of the biggest hidden cost drivers in injection molding tooling.

A straight pull mold opens in one direction, which keeps mold cost and cycle times low. Add a side hole, snap fit, or thread and the mold can no longer release your part. Now it needs a side action or lifter, and that means higher tooling cost on every part you run.

Most undercuts are avoidable. Catch them in your design for manufacturing review, not after the tool is cut.

Nylon vs. Aluminum: Which material is better for rapid prototyping? 🤔

Choosing the right prototype material can make a big difference in product performance!

Nylon is lightweight, flexible, and impact-resistant, while aluminum offers excellent strength, rigidity, and durability.

Explore how these materials compare in 3D printing, CNC machining, and product development.

Which would you choose for your next prototype? Let us know in the comments!

How much does an injection molded plastic part really cost to make?

We took one polycarbonate part to IBEX in Tampa and asked marine industry pros to guess. Answers ranged from 5 cents to $17.85. Our instant quote system said 48 cents per part at 500 units.

Injection molding costs are hard to guess. They don’t have to be.

Sink marks show up on first article, usually on the surface your customer actually looks at.

Most teams blame the process and reach for packing pressure. The real cause is geometry. Plastic cools from the outside in, so any thick section behind a show surface keeps shrinking and pulls the skin down with it.

Injection molding design rules that prevent sink marks:

Rib thickness at 50 to 60 percent of nominal wall
Rib height under 3x nominal wall
Boss walls cored out, gussets instead of added material
Uniform nominal wall across the part

Texture hides minor sink. High gloss broadcasts it.

Free to fix in CAD. Expensive to fix in steel.

What happens after a resin 3D printer finishes printing? 👀

The parts still need cleaning! Watch how the IPA washing process removes uncured resin from 3D-printed components before further post-processing.

Take a closer look at this important step in resin 3D printing and industrial manufacturing.

Did you know 3D-printed parts go through this cleaning process?

It starts as a 2,000 lb coil of steel and a closed block of aluminum honeycomb.

The honeycomb is pulled open, bonded between steel sheets, finished in wood grain or leather, then CNC cut and edge banded. The result is flat packed honeycomb wall panels that are lighter than wood, water and mold resistant, and strong enough to build an entire showroom.

Some of the best manufacturing lessons come from outside your own industry.

How does resin 3D printing create detailed solid parts? ⚙️

Using precise light exposure, this additive manufacturing process transforms liquid resin into physical components, one layer at a time.

Watch our 3D printed aluminum dragon wrap around a wrist. Every joint moves, and it comes off the printer already assembled.

Metal 3D printing builds moving, interlocking parts in a single print, with no fasteners and no assembly. Plastic flexi dragons in PLA, ABS and nylon are fun, but an aluminum one shows what industrial additive manufacturing can really do.
