First Real Real haul of the season. What initiated my search was a new oversized black blazer to replace one I had lost. This shape is such a good closet staple. But like any good shopping spree I left with a dress I totally didn’t need and a STUNNING Markarian blazer that feels like a one of a kind piece. Which is your favorite?

Quick recap: paper flowers started in China around 100 BC, crossed the Pacific into Mexican folk tradition, became a Victorian parlor art, then a French couture obsession — Legeron in 1727, Lemarié’s Chanel camellia by the 1960s, a mechanical paper garden at Chanel’s Spring 2015 show.

Which brings us to now — and to the flowers you keep asking about.

The Green Vase was started by Livia Cetti, a former Martha Stewart Weddings style editor who began hand-shaping crepe paper into blooms for the magazine’s pages. Her first flowers sold to John Derian’s shop in Manhattan. Today, every piece is still hand-dyed, cut, and shaped by her small studio in the Bronx — not mass-produced like the artificial flowers at a big box store, but made one petal at a time, the same way a couture atelier works.

Quick recap: Dodie Thayer was a South Florida creative, born into Jupiter, Florida’s pioneer DuBois family. She taught herself to mold clay onto real lettuce and cabbage leaves in her own kitchen. Her pieces became a Palm Beach obsession, collected by Jackie Kennedy, the Duchess of Windsor, and Barbara Sinatra.

Tory Burch, a longtime lover of American history and design, was captivated by Thayer’s work and knew it was a tradition worth preserving. She approached Thayer directly about licensing her designs — a way to keep this handmade American art form alive for a new generation, even as Thayer, then in her 90s, could no longer produce it alone.

This collection was the first thing I registered for once I got engaged. It makes me so happy every time I walk into my dining room. I’m so grateful Tory kept this tradition alive.

I found these antique survey maps of Georgetown on Facebook Marketplace. They’re from Baist’s Real Estate Atlas — maps made in the early 1900s for real estate buyers. What I love about these maps is I am able to point out the historic location of local business I know and love today such as the Tuckernuck flagship on Wisconsin & N streets!

Antiquing tip: survey maps, plat maps, and old real estate atlases are some of the most overlooked pieces for a statement wall — they’re historically significant, endlessly interesting up close, and almost always more affordable than a decorative print.
