“We’re not a trucking company, so DOT drug testing doesn’t apply to us.”
That assumption can create a very expensive compliance gap.
DOT-regulated safety-sensitive work extends across commercial motor carriers, aviation, rail, public transit, pipelines and maritime operations. And the determining factor is often the function an employee performs — not the title printed on the business card.
A maintenance employee, dispatcher, mechanic, pipeline worker, transit operator or other employee may fall under a DOT testing rule even when the company itself does not think of itself as a “transportation company.”
The first compliance question is not “What industry are we in?”
It is: “Which employees perform federally regulated safety-sensitive functions, and under which DOT agency?”
NMS Screening & Compliance helps employers identify the right testing framework and keep DOT and non-DOT programs properly structured.
