MEET THE CO-FOUNDERS OF JAKE’S JAVA

Behind every dream is a story.

Jake’s Java was founded by Dr. Kathy Mercier and Dr. Jennifer Slater-Sanchez, two longtime educators, advocates, and Antelope Valley residents who believe everyone deserves the opportunity to work, contribute, and belong.

For decades, Kathy has dedicated her career to helping students develop the skills they need to successfully transition into adulthood, employment, and independent living. She has spent her professional life creating pathways for young adults to gain confidence, purpose, and real-world workforce experience.

Jennifer’s passion for Jake’s Java is deeply personal. As the parent of twins, including a son with autism, she has spent years thinking about what happens when school services end and how adults with disabilities can find meaningful employment, independence, and community.

Together, Kathy and Jennifer have seen firsthand the challenges many adults with disabilities face after age 22, when opportunities often become limited and families are left searching for answers.
Rather than accepting the status quo, they decided to create something different.

Jake’s Java is more than a coffee shop. It is a vision for meaningful employment, inclusion, independence, and community connection. It is a place where adults with and without disabilities can work side-by-side, build relationships, and thrive.

But Antelope Valley, WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Kathy and Jennifer are investing their own money into Jake’s Java because they believe in this mission wholeheartedly. But bringing this vision to life will take more than two people—it will take a community that believes in creating opportunities for everyone.
This is our way of giving back to the Antelope Valley, the community we have proudly called home for decades.

If you’d like to be part of the solution and help create meaningful employment opportunities for adults with disabilities, we’d love your support. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61590211656884

Trobute to Our Veterans

As we celebrate 250 years of our nation this year, we’re reminded that America’s strength has always come from people willing to serve something greater than themselves. Our theme for my annual Tribute to Veterans and Military Families last weekend was “We the People,” highlighting the shared responsibility we all have to care for one another and strengthen our communities. Congratulations to our outstanding honorees, Lieutenant William Kitchin, Sergeant John Strosnider, and Deputy Kenneth Cianciosi, three veterans who’ve become Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department personnel, dedicating their lives to the service of our country and county. It’s a duty and privilege to take time out of our Memorial Day Weekend to honor our veterans and their loved ones for their service and sacrifice.

Family Movie Nights Returns to the Palmdale Amphitheater with Four Blockbuster Films

The City of Palmdale is bringing back one of the season’s most beloved traditions: summer Family Movie Nights featuring four blockbuster films shown under the desert stars at the Palmdale Amphitheater, located at 2727 Rancho Vista Blvd.

“Family Movie Nights are one of those simple traditions that make Palmdale feel like home,” said Mayor Eric Ohlsen. “Families can settle in under the stars and enjoy a night out that kids will remember long after summer is over. With free admission for children 12 and under, this is exactly the kind of affordable, family-centered programming our community deserves.”

The lineup features a mix of brand-new releases and classic family favorites that are guaranteed to delight every generation:

* June 12 - Zootopia 2
* June 26 - Lilo & Stitch (2002)
* July 3 - The Sandlot (1993)
* July 10 - The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants

Attendees are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite characters, whether a zany Zootopian, a lovable alien, a sandlot slugger or a citizen of Bikini Bottom.

“The Palmdale Amphitheater is at its best when it is filled with families, laughter and shared community moments,” said Mayor Pro Tem Austin Bishop. “Family Movie Nights give residents an easy, low-cost way to enjoy a summer evening together while making full use of one of Palmdale’s premier venues.”

Gates open at 6 p.m., and movies begin at dusk. Tickets are $5 for adults and free for children 12 and under. Take your movie night to the next level with the Movie Night Box Package. Perfect for families and friends, this package guarantees you a reserved viewing spot for up to 8 guests, along with a snack pack featuring popcorn, an assortment of candy and more. Tickets must be purchased in advance at www.PalmdaleAmphitheater.com. Guests are welcome to bring lawn chairs, blankets, outside food and non-alcoholic beverages. Snack vendors will also be available.

Security will inspect all bags and coolers at the entrance. Alcohol and pets are not permitted.

Memorial Bench Program

Every bench tells a story. We recently spoke with families who chose to honor their loved ones through our Memorial Bench Program, creating lasting spaces of remembrance in the parks that meant so much to them.

This video honors the memories of Justin, Erick, and Anthony. From celebrating cherished memories to raising awareness for important causes, these benches become more than a place to sit. They become a tribute, a legacy, and a way for loved ones to continue touching the community for years to come.

Thank you to the families who shared their stories with us and allowed us to be part of such meaningful moments.

The Memorial Bench Program through our PARCS department offers residents the opportunity to dedicate a bench in honor of a loved one at select City parks.

Lancaster’s First FlashVote Survey Coming Soon

Do you have about one minute a month to help make Lancaster better?

Beginning May 28, selected Lancaster residents may receive text messages from the public survey research platform FlashVote.

The City of Lancaster is working with FlashVote to engage the community and gather valuable input from residents to inform our decisions. We encourage residents to sign up if they receive a text message from FlashVote.

You can also sign up here now: flashvote.com/lancasterca or call 775-235-2240 to participate by phone or text only.

Sign up takes less than one minute and your input is always kept anonymous. Personal or demographic information collected by FlashVote is never shared with the City or anyone else. When residents sign up, they can determine how surveys are received – whether by email, text or phone call. They will receive a notification whenever there is a new survey, and they will have 48 hours to participate before voting closes. Once a survey is closed, everyone who participated will automatically receive a summary of the overall results and be able to see how their responses compare to the group.

Please watch for text messages to be sent starting May 28 and sign up so you don’t miss the first survey – coming soon!
