For roughly thirty years a fleet of Chinese junks worked San Diego Bay, and San Diegans ate almost entirely what those boats brought in. 🐟

From about 1860 into the early 1890s a fishing village stood near what is now Talbot Street and Anchorage Lane on Point Loma, along the old La Playa Trail. At its height, records describe 52 fishermen living in 22 shacks and sailing as many as 28 junks.

They built the boats themselves. The largest, the Sun Yun Lee, was launched in 1884: 52 feet long, 16 feet across, three masts, redwood hull, with ironwood for the masts and rudder shipped from China.

Abalone was the prize, dried and salted and exported across the Pacific, alongside perch, bocaccio, corbina, sheepshead and bass, plus kelp and seaweed. Their catch supplied nearly all of San Diego's fresh fish and fed the crews building the California Southern Railroad.

Then the law closed in. Exclusion legislation from 1882 onward tightened around them, and an 1892 statute classified fishermen as laborers subject to exclusion, so men who sailed home to China could not return. By 1893 the village was abandoned.

The junks are gone. The abalone are nearly gone. Almost nothing marks the beach where San Diego's first commercial fishing fleet was built.
