https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/08/190805134012.htm Prescribed burning is an essential tool, if not the most essential tool ecologists use to restore landscapes to thriving native plant communities. The fire ecology community has long agreed that CO2 emitted from fires is recaptured as the native plant communities recover, but this research postulates that the prescribed fires are not just carbon neutral, but in fact sequester carbon as charcoal, a stable form of organic matter in soils. Charcoal bits are common in Florida soil profiles to a depth of 2 meters or more. How did it get so deep from the soil surface? Pedoturbation is the disturbance of soil profiles including movement of soil materials by animals, typically burrowing animals. Thats how!

Charcoal produced by wildfires could trap carbon for hundreds of years and help mitigate climate change, according to new research. A new study quantifies the important role that charcoal plays in helping to compensate for carbon emissions from fires. Researchers say that this charcoal could effecti...

spotted a pair of Black Bellied Whistling Ducks and 4 juveniles at the Panama City Conservation Park while doing recon at a habitat restoration site. Reported to ebird.com and noted that 6 adults were observed close by (flying overhead) in 2017. If you are a birder and want to add this species to your life list, take the main gravel/dirt road beyond the parking area, north until you see the flooded area on the left.
