Threads (Meta - Facebook/Instagram’s Twitter competitor) is here. We know, we know…ANOTHER social channel/app to maintain and worry about. We’ve tested it for a bit, and these are some of the things you should know:
— You do NOT need to remember another login/password. Threads is an Instagram project, so it’ll pull your Instagram data (login, profile information, profile photo, etc.). You’ll be able to find all of your friends there to follow, and whenever they join, it’ll automatically follow them.
— There is a 500-character limit. This limit is a bit more than Twitter’s 280-character limit (Twitter’s becomes 10,000 when you pay for Twitter Blue).
— Threads are meant to be used for text updates, but it also support photos and videos up to five minutes long.
— Threads can be posted to Instagram stories or shared via a link.
— Currently, there is NO ability to be signed into multiple accounts and pop over easily as you do now with Instagram.
— There is also NO ability to DM or customize your feed, but Adam Mosseri (Instagram’s VP of Product) said those features are expected to roll out soon.
— Enhanced recommendation engine and search functionality will be rolled out over time.
— Threads is open source, and Meta’s goal is to make it compatible with Fediverse (distributed and decentralized server network) and ActivityHub (the open social networking protocol established by the World Wide Web Consortium) so it'll work with other Fediverse apps like Mastodon.
