A 30-foot bloom stalk in a front yard is certainly eye-catching, and from a plant science perspective, it is a remarkable example of plant development.

This local century plant, Agave americana, is entering the flowering stage of its life cycle. Despite its common name, a century plant does not typically take 100 years to bloom. After many years of growth and energy storage, the plant produces a tall flowering stalk as part of its natural reproductive process.

For those of us who work with plants every day, this is a great reminder of how much science is taking place in the landscape around us. Plant growth is influenced by physiology, nutrition, environmental conditions, water quality, root-zone health, and time; all factors that help tell the larger story of plant performance.

At QAL, we appreciate moments like this because they connect everyday observations with the science behind healthy, productive plant growth. Sometimes plant science shows up in a report, and sometimes it shows up 30 feet tall in a Panama City yard.
