Set a calendar reminder a couple of days before renewal so you can decide whether it’s worth keeping. A trial should help you try something—not surprise you with a charge.

Android streaming boxes that promise access to every channel and movie for free can come with a hidden cost. The boxes themselves aren't the problem if used with legitimate streaming services. It's the apps that get installed on them to stream pirated content that can put your home network at risk, sometimes opening it up to being used by someone else entirely. They do this by letting outside traffic route through your internet connection using a residential proxy network without you knowing it's happening. If that traffic is involved in a cybercrime, then the connection could be traced back by law enforcement to your home network.

If an app promises free access to content no legitimate service provides, that's a sign it's worth avoiding. Stay safe online and know what is on your network.

A stolen password shouldn’t be all it takes to get into your account. Turn on two-step verification wherever it’s offered, especially for email and banking. An authenticator app or security key can add another layer of protection. Save your recovery codes somewhere safe, and never share a sign-in code with someone who calls or messages you.

A browser pop-up claiming your computer is infected can look convincing—especially when it tells you to call “support” right away. Don’t call the number, install software, or give a stranger remote access to your device. Close the tab or browser; if it won’t close, use your device’s task manager or force-quit option. If you’re concerned, open your trusted security software directly instead of following the pop-up.

Whether it's a lost phone, a broken laptop, or even ransomware, losing your photos and files can turn into a real crisis when you don’t have a backup.

A simple cloud backup service, or even an external drive you connect every so often, can turn that disaster into just an inconvenience.

This week, check whether your important photos and documents are actually backed up somewhere. If they're not, set something up. Future you will be glad you did.

Sun outages occur every year in the spring and fall. During the sun outage, you may experience a pixelated, frozen picture or audio distortion for a brief period. This fall, sun outages are expected to start in early October and lasting until the third week of October.

Many people reuse the same password across multiple accounts because it's easier to remember. The problem is that if one of those sites gets hacked, every other account using that same email and password combination becomes vulnerable too.

The fix is simple. Use a password manager to create and store a different, strong password for every account you have. You only need to remember one master password, and the manager takes care of the rest.

This week, try picking one password manager. Many phones and browsers already include one , or you can use something like Bitwarden, which is free and works across all your devices adding security to your logins. Small steps can make a real difference in keeping your accounts safe.
