Town of Paonia Announces Stage 1 Fire Restrictions

The Town of Paonia has enacted Stage 1 Fire Restrictions, effective Tuesday, June 16, 2026, in coordination with Delta County and regional fire safety partners.

We know nobody loves more restrictions. But dry conditions, hot weather, and one careless spark can turn a normal summer day into a serious emergency. These restrictions are a common-sense step to help protect Paonia, our surrounding neighborhoods, local farms and ranches, open spaces, first responders, and everyone who calls this valley home.

The attached flyer outlines what is currently restricted and what is still allowed under Stage 1. Please take a minute to review it before burning, grilling, camping, working outdoors, or using equipment that could create sparks.

Fire restrictions can change quickly and may differ between the Town of Paonia, Delta County, neighboring counties, national forests, BLM land, and National Park Service land. Before you head out, check the latest regional information at WestSlopeFireInfo.com.

Residents are also encouraged to sign up for emergency alerts at DeltaCountyCO.gov/Alerts or sign up for Paonia’s TextMyGov system by texting the word PAONIAINFO to 91896.

If you see an active fire, call 9-1-1 immediately.

Thank you for doing your part to keep Paonia safe. A little caution now goes a long way toward preventing a very bad day later.

The heat is here. The fuels are noticing.

Across many parts of the country, grasses and other vegetation are drying out, temperatures are climbing, and fire danger is increasing.

With hot, dry conditions expected across much of the West, now is a good time to review your wildfire preparedness plans, know local fire restrictions, and recreate responsibly.

A little preparation today can make a big difference tomorrow.

Visit ready.gov/wildfires for more information on how to prepare yourself, community, and families.

The National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook was released on June 1st, by Predictive Services, providing a look ahead at expected fire potential from June through September.

With the potential for increased fire activity, particularly across parts of the West, now is the time to make sure your family, home, and community are prepared. Visit ready.gov/wildfires to learn how to strengthen your home, create an emergency plan, and stay safe during a wildfire emergency.

Fire activity increased modestly across the U.S. in May, with brief periods of increased activity mid and late month. The Southern Area observed a decrease in overall activity, especially in the latter half of the month, as periods of precipitation brought relief. Elsewhere, activity overall matched the national trends.

Given the low but persistent level of activity, the National Preparedness Level remained at two (on a scale of 1-5) through May. As of May 31, 2,412,214 acres have burned across the country, which is 195% of the previous 10-year average. So far this year 30,588 wildfires have been reported, also well above average, at 140%.

As a reminder, red areas on the maps indicate above-normal significant wildland fire potential, meaning there is a greater-than-usual likelihood that significant wildland fires will occur. White areas indicate normal significant wildland fire potential, where significant wildland fires are expected to occur at typical times and intervals.
