We get asked about how EARLY Thoroughbred breeding was going on in Bourbon County. How’s about 1826 and BERTRAND, one of the two best sons of the great Sir Archy? Bertrand stood at John Hutchcraft’s BoCo farm from 1826 until 1838. Bertrand was “the most popular stallion in Kentucky, covering nearly 200 mares each season”, according to Anne Peters on the Thoroughbred Heritage website profile that features this painting by Edward Troye. For your bit of BoCo history trivia for the day, Hattie Hutchcraft Hill copied this painting, working in charcoal, in about 1887. (John was her uncle.)
