Tiny House Brothers

Tiny House Brothers A chronicle of brothers Michael and Christopher Schulz, in their pursuit of tiny home living. Dedica Welcome! We're off to a flying start. How is that possible?

Mikey and me (Chris), will be your tour guides for a magical and obsessive/compulsive trip into tiny home living. You'll learn at our expense as we try to drop out of the rat race and live the dream. We were having a lively debate one day (Ok, it was an argument) about how rather than trying to make more money or live in some third world country where the cost of living was cheaper, wouldn't it be

better if we adopted a lifestyle that required little or no money? But how do you go about this? We are both married, approaching our golden years (Mikey more so than me!) and having a number of health issues.I have been interested in the tiny house movement for quite some time and wondered if this might be the solution. Is this the means to our ends? We began to look at how living in a tiny home might impact our lives, doing the old pros and cons thing. Less room, less comfort, less stuff were all disadvantages, or were they? What could we possibly hope to gain? As I began to really look at how things could be, I quickly realized that having less could actually turn out to be having more. If you were to live in a tiny house that you built yourself with no mortgage, you would certainly have more money. Less taxes, less maintenance, less utilities, etc. But you would also have more time (our most important asset), more freedom, and just as beneficial, less stress. Sounds good doesn't it? So there it is, This is what has gotten the ball rolling for us and we look forward to sharing this journey with you. Honestly, the amount of information on the web regarding tiny houses is relatively limited. I consumed most of it in a day, and was left wanting more. Maybe Mikey and me can add to that base of knowledge and even give you a chuckle or two. Check back periodically, new post posts as my old bones and bowling ball sharp mind permit! Oh, and please "Like" and "Follow us on FB!

Where There’s Smoke…There’s Barbecue! http://wp.me/p4XqyS-5o

Even though the weather outside has slowed our progress on the tiny home front, I have put the finishing touches on my very own home-made smoker. I absolutely love smoked and barbecued foods, and was considering buying a smoker for home use when I discovered plans on-line to build my own. The trouble with inexpensive cookers is that they don't regulate the heat very well and require constant attention. [ 432 more words. ]

Yep, it's the middle of winter. Well, we hyperboreans (people living in the Northern hemisphere) are enjoying our cold season. For most would-be tiny housers, it's "slow" season. But it really shouldn't be. It is in fact "homework" season...pun intended. Starting in November to December, you should have noticed a number of special features in those magazines you see at checkout lines of your local hardware and lumber store. [ 377 more words. ]

Mike and I have both been dealing with health issues and some personal problems, but we are both hoping that the new year will bring some exciting new changes for us. Speaking of the new year, I hope everyone had a great Christmas and didn't over-indulge in cookies. [ 174 more words. ]

Mike had mentioned aesthetics in his post about foundations. This got me to thinking about what aesthetics are and how they relate to what I'm trying to do. Sometime ago, I mentioned being inspired by my mom, who told of growing up in a tiny home herself. This was back in the 1930's mind you, and back then, no had even heard of the Tiny House Movement. Folks back then lived in these modest homes for the sake of necessity. Some of these old homes are still around today, although they may be somewhat unrecognizable. [ 603 more words. ]

See that picture above? Can you recognize it? Maybe it's a tiny house on wheels...mmmm, no. Actually, it's an illustration of a locomotive in the steampunk style of design. Oh, now you see it! Are you wondering why that image is in a blog about tiny houses? Your answer is in the adjacent image. Yep, that's a real tiny house on a locomotive-like carriage. [ 568 more words. ]

After months of research and thinking about what I wanted in my tiny home, I came up with this list. Yours, likely, will be different.
