Where do I even begin with this lab?

September is Public Health Laboratory Appreciation Month, recognizing the laboratories that anchor our public health infrastructure.

Disease detection. Outbreak response. Environmental and food safety monitoring. All of it depends on containment systems built and verified to the BMBL.

At World BioHazTec, we consult on the design, commission and verify the infrastructure these laboratories rely on. This month, we're recognizing the scientists and technicians whose work is largely invisible to the public it protects.

World BioHazTec was honored to participate in a panel discussion at the The Universities at Shady Grove (USG) as part of the NASH-WestEd Metrics Academies, bringing together employers and higher education leaders to explore how stronger partnerships can better prepare students for today's workforce.

Our President, Kerstin Haskell, shared an employer's perspective on the skills, experiences, and professional competencies that help undergraduate and graduate students become more workforce-ready and attractive candidates to hiring organizations.

The discussion included leaders from Towson University, the University of Baltimore, and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, who presented innovative approaches for increasing employer engagement and strengthening connections between academic programs and career opportunities. Conversations focused on how universities, businesses, and professional associations can collaborate to ensure students develop practical skills, industry awareness, and meaningful professional networks before graduation.

Maryland continues to demonstrate its commitment to being a premier destination for higher education and workforce development by encouraging collaboration between academia and industry. We were encouraged to see university leaders actively seeking employer feedback and creating programs designed to make learning more relevant, applicable, and impactful for students entering the workforce.

The World BioHazTec Asia, Middle East & Africa Office (AMEA) has had a busy and rewarding summer, supporting the biosafety and biorisk management community across the region.

From May through June, World BioHazTec was proud to sponsor three major biosafety and biorisk management events: the Biosafety Association (Thailand) Conference, the Indonesian Biorisk Association (IBA) Conference, and the BRAP- Biorisk Association of the Philippines Antique Convention.

Our team was honored to contribute to these important gatherings. Chanya Srisaowakarn presented at the Biosafety Association (Thailand) Conference, while Dan Yoong shared insights and perspectives at both the IBA Conference and BRAP Convention.

These events showcased the dedication, expertise, and collaborative spirit that continue to advance biosafety and biorisk management throughout the region. We extend our sincere appreciation to the leaders and volunteers who make these conferences possible, including Diah Iskandriati, President of IBA; Dr. M. Martin N. Moreno, Jose Jr. Obedencio, BRAP Convention Chair; and Ronaldo E. Puno, President of BRAP. Their commitment to strengthening biosafety programs and professional networks is making a lasting impact in their respective countries and beyond.

One of the greatest privileges of participating in these conferences is the opportunity to learn from colleagues across the biosafety profession. World BioHazTec recently delivered BSL-3 Emergency Response Training and Drills for the Louisiana Department of Health Public Health Laboratory in Baton Rouge.

Over 1.5 days, participants applied the emergency management cycle, developed spill response strategies for BSCs, centrifuges, and areas outside containment, and practiced injury response and emergency extraction.

Local Fire Department First Responders joined Day 2 for hands-on exercises, a facility tour, and collaborative after-action reviews—strengthening coordination for future incidents.

The engagement and teamwork were outstanding, and we look forward to their continued progress and regular drills.
And as always, fidgets played a key role in learner focus—Baton Rouge brought impressive creativity!

The University of Maryland's Cyber-Physical Systems Engineering program combines computer science, electrical engineering, and computer engineering to prepare the next generation of innovators. Through the five-week Jumpstart Your Engineering Career Summer Program, students gain hands-on experience with electronics, sensors, microcontrollers, and real-world product development.

Our own Tracey Brown had the privilege of serving as a Demo Day judge, witnessing the incredible creativity and technical talent on display. Student teams showcased innovative projects including:
🚲 Bike E-Buddy – A smart bicycle safety system
⠿ Dot Bot – Software that converts verbal input into Braille and creates Braille labels
🏈 Galea Guard – A smart football helmet that collects and displays impact data in real time

In a BSL-3 laboratory, containment integrity depends on more than HVAC systems and HEPA filtration. Even small details, such as improperly sealed electrical receptacles, can create leakage pathways that affect containment and decontamination performance.

A component can pass a factory test—and the installed system can still fail.

In a BSL-3 laboratory, containment depends on more than individual equipment ratings. Field joints, ductwork, gaskets, transitions, and connections must perform together under real operating conditions.

Installed-condition testing verifies the complete exhaust assembly after installation, helping teams identify leakage pathways that bench testing alone may miss.

Because true compliance is not based on how a component performs in isolation. It is based on whether the entire system performs safely and reliably as designed.
