We had a fantastic time at the 69th ABSA International Annual Biosafety & Biosecurity Conference in Mobile, Alabama!

It was a pleasure exhibiting, reconnecting with longtime friends and colleagues, and making many new connections along the way. We even made a few four-legged friends thanks to the adorable puppies who stole the show in the exhibit hall!

One of the highlights of the week was seeing Kerstin Haskell, President of World BioHazTec, facilitate the Affiliate Solutions Exchange. In her role as Vice Chair of the Affiliate Relations Committee, Kerstin led an interactive brainstorming session where affiliate leaders shared challenges, exchanged ideas, and identified opportunities to better support one another and strengthen the biosafety community.

Thank you to Mobile for the warm hospitality, great conversations, and memorable experience. We left inspired by the passion, collaboration, and dedication of the biosafety and biosecurity professionals who make this community so special. And we have to say, some of the nicest people in the world really are down South!

MYTH vs. FACT

MYTH: If smoke doesn't move inward when the door is cracked open, the BSL-3 laboratory has lost containment.
âś… FACT: A cracked-door test does not represent how a BSL-3 laboratory is designed to operate.

Containment performance should be verified using calibrated instrumentation and evaluated under normal operating conditions, not artificial conditions that defeat the HVAC system's design intent.

Takeaway: Directional airflow is an engineered pressure condition, not a visual effect.

MYTH: Every door in a BSL-3 facility should be treated the same.
âś… FACT: Different doors support different mission-critical functions.

One of the biggest misconceptions in high-containment design is that a single door strategy fits every situation. Effective facilities balance three objectives:
• Biosafety
• Biosecurity
• Life Safety

The best solution is rarely the most restrictive. It's the one that appropriately supports the function of that specific space.

Last week, the World BioHazTec team traveled to a major Midwestern university to conduct a feasibility study of its Effluent Decontamination System (EDS), a critical component of high-containment laboratory operations.

Our assessment focused on system condition, reliability, redundancy, maintainability, and future modernization opportunities to support long-term operational resilience and biosafety.

As laboratory infrastructure ages, organizations face important decisions about replacement, upgrades, and lifecycle planning. Studies like these help ensure critical systems continue to support safe and sustainable research operations.

How do you know if a decades-old BSL-3 laboratory can still meet today's containment demands—without shutting it down to find out?

The California Department of Public Health needed an independent answer for its two high-containment BSL-3 laboratories.

World BioHazTec ran a feasibility study and gap analysis against ANSI/ASSP Z9.14, BMBL, and NIH/CDC biosafety guidance—covering HVAC performance, airflow and pressure differentials, and failure scenario testing.

The result: a prioritized roadmap CDPH can use to modernize with confidence.

World BioHazTec joined the Maryland Commission for Women's Prosperity Small Business Event: Women in Business yesterday, featuring Maryland Brooke Lierman Comptroller of Maryland .

The event connected women entrepreneurs and small business owners with Maryland leadership and resources — grants, loans, and investment capital; free and subsidized business support including legal, accounting, HR, and office resources; and direct connections to state programs supporting women-owned businesses.

We were glad to be in the room alongside delegates, state executive directors, and small business owners from across Maryland, and appreciated the chance to connect with Comptroller Lierman directly.

When a BSL-3 laboratory has to complete emergency response training before a grant funding window closes—without sacrificing realism—there's little room for error.

The Louisiana Department of Health's Office of Public Health Laboratory needed a program built around real incident scenarios, with stronger coordination between lab staff and local emergency responders, on a tight timeline.

World BioHazTec designed and delivered a customized 1.5-day BSL-3 Emergency Response Training and Drill program, covering biological safety cabinets, centrifuges, spills, personnel injuries, and emergency extractions. On day two, local fire department first responders joined for hands-on exercises, facility tours, and after-action reviews.

Emergency preparedness isn't just about completing a training requirement. It's about knowing exactly what to do when an incident happens.
