Visited Hanford,California for the first time as part of HOPE’s Regional Leadership Program focused on the Central Valley which has a focus in three counties including Kings County. The community is rich for additional investment and I’m proud to be part of the team bringing leaders together to grow opportunities!

Yesterday, Blue Shield of California hosted their Latino/a Employee Resource Group, UNIDOS, Annual Event with a theme: Adelante: Unidos for Empowerment and Impact.

Both myself and Rafael González who leads Grand Performances were invited to give keynotes and address nearly 100 leaders who joined us virtually and the leaders in the room with us!

In hearing Rafael’s keynote, I was reminded that while we each have the chapters in our lives that shape our stories, there are so many connections and shared experiences that we face in our journeys of resilient leadership and community service. It’s always heartwarming to have a moment to reflect...

California Forward’s Economic Summit was amazing! Got a chance to meet new leaders, connect with friends and colleagues and learn a lot!

Through several tracks including: Industrial (R)evolution Track, Democracy Track, Regions Up Track and Resiliency Track we had the opportunity to hear from so many leaders across California’s key regions around themes related to civic engagement, procurement, affordability, clean energy and more!

Some additional takeaways:

-Procurement is one of the most powerful—and underleveraged—tools to advance equity and local economic growth in California.

-Civic groups and governments across the country are developing ways to engage the public in informed dialogue on issues of concern, in ways that have been shown to produce good results.

-There is a growing national emphasis on domestic supply chains, through recent legislation here in CA easing regulations for manufacturing facilities, leaders still need to define”advanced manufacturing” and discuss strategic industries for California.

-Communities across CA can leverage the emerging model of Climate Resilience Districts (CRDs)—local financing entities designed to capture and align resources for proactive investments that reduce climate risks to better equip our regions with national disaster preparedness.

So excited to meet Rey León, Mayor of Huron, and the founder and executive director of The LEAP Institute (Latino Equity Advocacy & Policy), a valley-based Latino nonprofit organization. Currently based in Fresno County, he focuses on economic, environmental, transportation and climate justice, clean energy, green jobs, and community development. He has been working to ensure that environmental justice principles are advanced in the region’s institutions and culture.

Also reconnected with Fabiola Moreno who is leading IBEW 569’s Renewable Energy and Manufacturing Division as Renewable Energy and Manufacturing Organizer (REMO), Fabiola grew up in Salinas Valley in the small agricultural town of Gonzales. She is a former Legislative Aide to Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia where she staffed the Assemblymember on bills related to agriculture, public safety, jobs and economic development, and labor. She is the founder of the Ruelas Fulfillment Foundation which supports high school students who want to pursue a career after high school while being committed to giving back to their communities. She is also part of HOPEs Latina Power Circle!

Amazing to hear Dr. Iliana Perez, Executive Director of Immigrants Rising during her panel earlier in the day. Dr. Perez and team have been leading the charge supporting entrepreneurs across California gain access to capital. The Immigrants Rising team just completed a study of mixed status entrepreneurs in Fresno, finding only 7% able to access capital through banks and only 1% were able to access through CDFIs. He team was able to distribute more than $5 million in grants to over 1,000 entrepreneurs and businesses as part of the SEED program.

So excited to be at California Forward’s 2025 Economic Summit in Stockton, California.

Today’s first Plenary Session “From Abundance to Shared Prosperity” focused on the need for California to reimagine models for growth—while maintaining the state’s focus on our climate and inclusive economy goals. Lindsay Maple, from UC Berkeley Possibility Lab who moderated the session, started the conversation by establishing a baseline definition around abundance pulling from the award winning book “Abundance” written by Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson. The book is a once-in-a-generation, paradigm-shifting call to renew a politics of plenty, face up to the failures of liberal governance, and abandon chosen sacrifices that have deformed American life.

Panelists included:
-Alvaro S. Sanchez, Samuel Appel, Libby Schafer, and Victor Flores all leaders genuinely interested in creating more economic prosperity across California for millions of families.

Two main takeaways from this session were:
1) To overcome the dark side of entrenched economic & political interests/power more systems that invite a broad range of stakeholders in public and private sectors to meet and engage in good faith conversations around necessary investments must be created.
2) Policies must be revisited on an ongoing basis. When legislators passed the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) in 1970, it was considered a modest regulation, meant to ensure that government agencies considered how public projects could impact the state’s residents, wildlife and natural resources. Since then, the law’s scope has massively expanded. CEQA provided an easy path to legally challenge almost any project — public or private, large or small — on environmental grounds. It’s a favored tool among special interest groups — from NIMBY neighbors looking to stop growth to labor unions trying to negotiate agreements. A decade-spanning political battle between housing developers and defenders of California’s preeminent environmental law likely came to an end this summer with the passage of a state budget-related housing bill, AB 130.
