“Pull every camera within five miles.”
That line works great in a movie. In real life, it doesn’t work like that.
We got this question in a recent Q&A, and the honest answer is that the US doesn’t run one connected system that sees everything. Most of the cameras are privately owned. They belong to businesses, property managers, and homeowners.
So when something happens, investigators don’t pull the footage. They canvass the area and ask whoever owns the camera.
For a business owner, that changes the question. It’s not “do I have cameras?” It’s:
→ Is my system recording right now?
→ Can I get the footage quickly when someone asks for it?
→ Do my cameras cover the entrances, the lot, and the places that matter?
If the answer to any of those is “I’m not sure,” that’s the gap.
At Danner’s, we install and monitor video surveillance systems for Texas-area businesses so the footage is there when it’s needed.
