The vineyard’s cover crop looks quite RADISHING this year 🫜We always plant a cover crop in the vineyard to help sequester carbon, prevent erosion, capture nitrogen and make natural fertilizer. Our standard mix includes barley, dundale peas, bell beans and Cayua oats.

BUT A NEW STAR HAS ARRIVED ⭐️ The last few years we’ve added a new plant at Jespersen Ranch: the Daikon Radish.

They can grow up to three feet deep (the same depth as a mechanical ripper would go!) and help break up our dense, clay soils. After the sheep are finished grazing we’ll let the radishes decompose in the ground where they will slowly release the nitrogen and other nutrients that they’ve trapped. They’re know as the “tillage radish” for a reason!

A quick break in the storm gave us a double rainbow over the vineyard this morning! 🌈🌈 It’s been a rainy week and we are loving it after a, literal, dry January. Over 3.5” at Heart Hill Vineyard in February alone!

Sound up for the one of the most beautiful sounds in the world: rain drops hitting the vines. We received over an 1” of rain overnight at Jespersen Ranch, with more in the forecast for this weekend!

Good thing we already have sheep at the vineyard, they’re going to have a feast with the abundant cover crop from this rain 🌧️

CHEERS TO 25 YEARS! This year we’re celebrating our 25th anniversary, and a lot has changed since Richard Niner (rare pic of our founder shown bere) purchased his first vineyard in 2001.

After bottling our first vintage in 2003 (Bootjack Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon) we eventually built our winery, opened a tasting room, started our restaurant and hit some other exciting milestones along the way:

🍷 We were named one of the “Best Winery Restaurants in America” by Food & Wine Magazine.

🌱 We earned the “2023 California Green Medal Sustainability Leadership Award for Business”.
A competitive award recognizing just four wineries a year.

☀️We converted our tasting room & winery to solar power in 2015

🍽️ We were named the “Top Winery Restaurant” by
USA Today in a voter led contest.

🍾 Our Winemaker Molly Bohlman was recognized as “Winemaker of the Year” for all of SLO County in 2025.

We can’t wait to see what this next year brings! Thank you all, endlessly, for your support.

Winemaker Patrick turned green waste into microbial gold! A 2026 goal of ours is to covert all of our winter burns into biochar burns 🔥 This will have three sustainable benefits in our greater ecosystem:

1️⃣ It diverts normal green waste (vine clippings, shrubs, fallen trees) into a useful product.

2️⃣ These special burns use specific air circulation and temperature to create a “smokeless” burn which captures carbon dioxide instead of releasing it into the atmosphere.

3️⃣ Biochar is a powerhouse in our compost program! A dice sized piece has the square footage of a basketball court - which makes it a haven for biodiverse microbial communities. And more diversity = healthier compost and happier soils in our vineyards and garden.

We tried to keep this explanation high level, but let us know if you want to get geekier! Patrick has done all the research and even led a seminar at our estate last year.

They’re baaaaaaack 🐑 If you drive by the tasting room this week you’ll likely see a herd of 400+ sheep grazing across Heart Hill Vineyard. They are “natures lawnmowers” and have lots of benefits!

🐑 They reduce the amount of tractors passes we have to do - in fact they will completely eliminate the Spring mowing.

🐑 They provide fertilizer on the go. When sheep digest the plants they eat, the nutrients in those crops become more available to the plants and beneficial microbes.

🐑 It’s a symbiotic relationship - we provide ample grazing land and the shepard gets free feed for his flock.

🐑 This is an ideal year to use sheep to graze. Early season rains have created a lush cover crop, and our vines are still deep in dormancy so they sheep don’t have any temptation to dine on the vines.

We also have a flock grazing through our coastal site, Jespersen Ranch. We’ll take a trip down to see them soon!
