Ray and Pam Derby moved to the Central Coast area in the early 1990’s with the intention of retiring. In 1998, they purchased their first vineyard property, now known as Derbyshire Vineyard and their thoughts of retirement were replaced by the inspiration of being a part of the wine world. In the years following, Ray next acquired the historic Laura’s Vineyard (in east Paso) and then the westside property, now called the Derby Vineyard. After experiencing nearly a decade as a grape grower, the potential strengths of each property became apparent and in 2008, Ray and Pam launched Derby Wine Estates. They are extremely selective in terms of what goes into the bottle under the Derby label. The commitment to the land is appreciable, with only 20 hand-selected acres being used to provide fruit for their own brand. Grapes from the remainder (some 90% of their total acreage) is sold to some of the finest wine producers in California.

Did you know that....

For several years in the 1920’s-30’s, Paso Robles was considered the Almond capital of the world. During that time, the Blue Diamond Almond Growers Association built a processing warehouse in downtown Paso. It took 5 months to build the 11,250-square-foot structure of reinforced concrete. Situated on 1.17 acres on Riverside Avenue, the building was in the perfect location between the town’s main road and the railroad tracks.

That iconic building is where we call home - Derby Estates W**ery.

Think you know Bordeaux grapes? Meet the dark horse of the bunch—Petit Verdot!

Originally from Bordeaux, Petit Verdot is a late-ripening variety known for producing deeply colored, intensely flavored w**es with plenty of structure. Paso Robles gives this grape plenty of opportunity to shine. With warm days, cool nights and a long growing season, Paso’s unique climate helps these late-ripening grapes develop their character.

In the glass, Petit Verdot can bring plum, blackberry, dark fruit, violet and spice, along with firm tannins and vibrant acidity. It’s often used as a blending grape to add color, structure and complexity—but when the conditions are right, it can absolutely steal the spotlight as a varietal w**e.

Small grape. Serious character. Definitely worth getting to know.

When visiting Paso Robles W**e Country, do as the locals do and venture out to the Santa Margarita District to dine at The Range.

While the restaurant may underwhelm at first glance, it’s world-class in the kitchen, with French- and Michelin-trained chefs. Their staple and seasonal entrees, including steaks, elk medallions, oak-smoked brisket, free-range chicken, roasted quail, duck confit, and fresh seafood, are all crowd-pleasers. This Saturday, October 10th, experience a time-honored tradition in Downtown Paso Robles.

The Pioneer Day Parade is part of the Pioneer Day Celebration, now in its 96th year! Starting at 10 am, the parade features antique tractors, horse- drawn wagons, marching bands, mounted equestrian groups, youth & church groups, floats, vintage cars, fire engines, military vehicles and more.

After the parade, stop by Derby Estates tasting room to cool off and enjoy w**e tasting in our historical Almond Growers Building, just a few short minutes from the end of the parade route.
