🌱 Bud Break Has Begun! 🌱
📍 Central Coast
Spring signals a major milestone in the vineyard—Bud Break is officially underway across the Central Coast winegrowing region.
As soil temps hit 50°F, grapevines awaken from dormancy. But there’s more behind the magic:

🍇 Chilling Hours: 200–600 hrs below 50°F needed to prep vines.
💧 Water Uptake: Root pressure rises, fueling new growth.
🌿 Hormonal Shifts: Cytokinins & Gibberellins increase as Abscisic acids drops.
☀️ Daylight: Longer days trigger the start of the season.

Bud Break timing varies by variety, pruning, soil moisture, and nutrient status—but the season’s energy is rising 🌞🍷

Fun Friday! A fun part of the job is using beneficial insects to control certain types of pests.
This is a type of anagyrus wasp that is used for mealybug control. Beneficial insects can provide very effective control and is becoming a more popular method to use in vineyards. They come in these bottles that you hang in the canopy or on the cordon wire. Typically, it is best to put them out mid-morning in a shady part of the canopy. It is important to hang them in an adjacent area close to the mealybug but not a vine with mealybugs because the ants. Ants will actually “farm” the mealybugs for the honeydew that they produce and will protect them from predators. So, if you put the bottle to close there is a chance that the ants can find it and kill any remaining wasp.
