Mystic is a treasure trove of rich maritime history, and one of its gems is the carved wooden signs found in local shops, restaurants, and homes along the shoreline. These signs beautifully reflect the coastal culture and artistry of the area.
One talented artist behind many of these iconic signs is Cam Bortz. Recently, he reached out while expanding his workshop, needing a client-facing showroom that feels like a museum - showcasing diverse fonts, typography, gold leafing, and styles.
For this project, we added a door connecting to his woodworking shop, creating seamless flow. Growing up on the shoreline, I always admired these signs in restaurants and boats, which inspired me to bring those Americana vibes to life into the space.
I envisioned a vibrant yet coastal palette, starting with Navy by Sherwin Williams. After a second tour, I decided to add a pop of Moroccan Red by Benjamin Moore above the chair rail!
We then laid out all the signs for each wall to create coordinated vignettes which made it easy for them to then be hung up.
It was a joy working with him and learning about the rich history of Mystic Carved Signs!
