Top Major Airline Pilot Career Value Exceeds $1,000,000 per Year with a 35-Year Career
The sum of annual pay, benefits, retirement contributions, and retirement fund interest at 5%.

The big four (AA, DL, SW, UA) plus Top Cargo airlines (FedEx and UPS) all offer career values approaching $1M per year. UPS still has an A-fund, which adds $2M at 40 years to the values on this chart, bringing it on par with FedEx, the top Major airline.

Of course, few pilots are hired in their mid-twenties and enjoy a 40-year career. Getting hired at 30 for civilian or 35 for military pilots is more common.

The average career value exceeds $500,000 per year after just 12 years, and even the lowest-paid Major reaches $600,000 per year after about 30 years. The average Major yields about $700,000 per year at 30 years.

How is it possible? FedEx EXAMPLE
Pay $474/Hr. X 92 Hours per Month = $517,608
Benefits non-retirement: Medical. Life, Vision, Loss of License: 15% X $517,608 = $77,614
Retirement DC & CBP contributions at 19% of income. $517,608 X 19% = $98,346
Retirement Fund Interest on $ 6,850,086 after 35 years x 5% interest = $342,504
Annual Total: $1,036,072

Wide-body Captain in about 25 years if available (16 years at FedEx)
Current fleet mix
Current pay rates in 2026 - no future increases added
No extra flying at 100%

Average hours at each airline – 71 to 92 hours; varies by airline; averages 83.4 Hours/Month
Most pilots are paid for about 5 hours more each month than they bid due to delays like weather and maintenance, plus vacation, training, and sick pay.

2026 is shaping up to be the 3rd-best year in history, with over 6,500 new jobs at the Majors.

What is a Top Flight Attendant career worth today?

Using the same approach I use for pilot careers – summing the annual pay, benefits, and retirement value from the 2026 contract and progressing through the career options of reserve duty domestic, domestic line holder, and then international flying, and finally becoming a Purser or lead Flight Attendant international.

American Airlines Pilot Pay Over 50 Years– Doing Well!

So the question from the economist on a recent pilot career earnings estimate case I was retained on was “How are American pilots doing compared to inflation over time?” It boils down to the difference between their pay rate increases and the inflation rate; economists call it the “Discount Rate” because, since the beginning of time, inflation has always reduced the purchasing power of the dollars you are paid today in the future.

However, for pilots, that is no longer true. Pilot pay at American and the rest of the Major airlines has grown faster than inflation, especially since the end of the “Great Recession” in 2009. The Regionals have done even better. It is projected to continue the current trend of almost doubling the inflation rate each year.

Here is a 50-year lookback at the pilot pay increases for large, medium, and small airliners at American (B-777, B-757, B-737) from 1975 to 2026. The inflation trendline I displayed starts at $54 per hour in 1975 (Small Aircraft Captain Rate) and increases that amount by the historical annual inflation rate. The result is $336 per hour, or about 90% of the current top rate for the smaller aircraft Captain, $382. It was true that airline pilots' pay took a big hit after 9/11, and it took until 2013 after the end of the Great Recession to recover, but we are back, and we have been back for a while now.

Additionally, retirement benefit formulas have seen a large increase from 12% to 16% just a few years ago, up to 18 to 20%, and work rules have improved too.

This analysis was pieced together from many different resources: old salary surveys, pilot contracts, and union summaries, and there were some missing data points, so it is not perfect, but it makes the point that pilots are holding their own near the top of the food chain.

When will you make Widebody Captain at Delta?
Or Widebody FO or Narrowbody Captain - Take a Look!

You may know someone who was a Major airline Captain off the street at United or "made it" in a year or two at another Major airline. While this may be possible for some, you likely won't be able to do so, or want to, at most airlines.

The following tables and charts look at what was happening at Delta Air Lines on 1/1/2026. There were a few Captains with about four years, some made it sooner. Most pilots are looking for some balance between income and lifestyle. Captain at the earliest opportunity often means an undesirable junior base like New York and an extended time on reserve. The money is great, but the quality of life, especially if you are commuting to the reserve, is low. Reserve in your base may not be so bad.

The bottom 25% of pilots in any given base, aircraft, and seat are on reserve each month. The bottom of the reserve portion of the seniority list has no control over their schedule - weekends and holidays will not be available. If you are a commuter, late departures with early returns to make getting to work and back home after a trip difficult or impossible. As you gain seniority, your days off become more selectable and adjustable on reserve. Getting off of reserve is a frequent goal for achieving a better quality of life.

Other than your first bid in initial training, you will determine where you are based, what you fly, when and where you fly it, if you wait to move up to a larger aircraft or the Captain's seat. It is all a balancing act between money and schedule flexibility/time off. It is seeking this balance that makes positions like widebody FO such a good deal for some, both more money and a good schedule.

At the bottom of the list, you move to the airline's needs, and at the top, you get to choose from many options. The flexibility these choices offer in your personal life makes many pilots happy most of the time. Remember the three things that matter most - Seniority, Seniority, and Seniority. Your job is simply to get the job you want as soon as possible!

FedEx TA Career Values Top Major Airlines for Careers Over 15 Years!

The new FedEx Tentative Agreement will exceed $30. Million in today’s dollars for a 40-year career.

I know almost no one works 40 years, but a few do. The average new-hire pilot is more like 35 than 25 years of age, yielding a 30-year career. Average career values – pay, benefits, and retirement, for a 30-year career, are approaching $15 million these days, and the new FedEx TA is closer to $20 million. This is a 25% premium over the average career at the Majors. Almost four times the lowest Major, which is Allegiant, which comes in at $8.8 Million, and home most nights.

FedEx Tentative Agreement - First Look, Looks Good!
Often, the latest contract is the best building on the gains of the previous contracts.
They call it “pattern bargaining”, and you may come to love that term.

This certainly appears to be the case with the new FedEx TA. This put them back in their usual top- or near-top position. Offering an initial increase of almost 40% and three 3% annual increases through 2030 if ratified.

They dumped their A-Fund traditional defined benefit pension for new pilots. However, they added innovative concepts, such as an expanded Market-Based Cash Balance Plan (MBCBP). The MBCBP has high annual contribution limits, avoiding the tax penalty incurred by traditional 401(k)s for contributions above the limit ($72,000 in 2026). American, Delta, and United add this tax-sheltering feature to amounts paid up to 2% over the limit, but within their current 18% contribution. Southwest adds 2% to the current 18%, for a total company-paid contribution of 20%. FedEx puts in 9% now, and 10% starting in 2029, into an MBCBP! This should eliminate most, if not all, of the “spillover” problem where you must be paid the retirement contributions that exceed the 401(k) limits and taxed on the excess.

Of course, their existing 9% defined contribution (DC) plan remains, with a total company contribution of 18% (19% in 2029). My assumptions are based on only a 5% annual growth rate. Many of my friends and I at various Major airlines have enjoyed between 9 and 12% over our careers.

This unique MBCBP feature, when combined with competitive pay rates that will exceed $500/hour ($512.48) in January of 2030, work rule improvements, and $150,000 or $100,000 Retro pay for Captains and First Officers, makes for an industry-leading package.

A reminder that the median individual income is $65,000. The median household income in the US is about $84k, and the average is $121k. Less than 60% have a retirement plan. Contributions average 3-6%. Major airline pilots average close to $300,000/year and enjoy an average 18% company-paid contribution. This is a retirement you can actually retire on and live in the manner to which you have become accustomed.

These appear to be the best of times, with lots of pilot retirements at age 65, a growing economy, and a shortage of qualified and experienced pilots. The uncertainty comes from the current oil crisis in the Middle East, two wars in Iran and Ukraine, rising oil prices, and inflation. The airline seat is a commodity, and the airline’s success in selling their product rides with the general US and world economies. Where they are headed at the moment is anybody's guess.

2026 is looking like the 3rd best year in history, with over 7,500 new jobs at the Majors.
