Pediatric Vehicular Heatstroke

On Sunday July 26, 2026, in Midland, Texas a 2-year-old child was left in a locked car for hours. This tragic loss marks the 1st PVH death in Texas in 2026 and brings the national total to 15 reported fatalities this year (noheatstroke.org).

What is PVH? Pediatric vehicular heatstroke (PVH) occurs when a child’s body overheats inside a vehicle and is unable to cool down, which can lead to permanent brain damage, organ failure, or death.

Why does PVH happen? Kids are forgotten, gained access or knowingly left.

Some kids get into the next car seat too fast

Use your car seat until your child reaches the maximum weight or height limit listed on the label.

All infants and toddlers should ride in a rear-facing car seat as long as possible. Why?Because if you are in a front-end crash, a rear-facing car seat allows your child’s head, neck, and spine to move evenly into the seat, not away from it.

Children who have outgrown the rear-facing weight or height limit for their car seat should move to a forward-facing car seat with a 5-point harness and top tether.

The Pearland Fire Department holds monthly car seat inspections by appointment only.

The City of Pearland is seeking to hire a Part-Time CRR Specialist to lead and improve aspects of the day-to-day operations of our Community Risk Reduction division within the Fire Department.

The Part-Time CRR Specialist earns a competitive salary of $21.83 - $23.63/hour, based on qualifications. We also offer access to the city's recreation fitness center and employee assistance program.

Work schedule is flexible Monday-Thursday, 15-21 hours per week; some evenings/weekends may be required, depending on events.

For the past 7 days, Captain Ryan, Lieutenant Kohn and Driver Operator Rendall of our Pearland Fire Department water rescue team have proudly served alongside numerous in state and out of state Task Force Teams in the Texas Hill Country, assisting with search and rescue operations following the devastating floods.

Their mission reflects the very best of the fire service, showing up in any way possible when Texans need us most. We are incredibly proud of their willingness to serve far from home during one of our state’s most difficult times and truly value the sacrifices their families go through for them to help others.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with the families who have experienced unimaginable loss, the communities working to recover, and every responder continuing this mission.

Thank you to our members for representing the City of Pearland and the Pearland Fire Department with humility, compassion, and excellence. Hope to see you headed back home soon. Stay smart.

Would you sit in a vehicle with 114 degree temperatures? Take a look at PFD’s Heat Display that show both the temperature outside and inside a vehicle. Temperature readings were every 10 minutes and total on site time was an hour.

Let this be your reminder to never leave children or pets in a vehicle alone. These readings were with the vehicle running and AC on.
