Horse corral installation will begin next week at campsites #5, #18, and #19! During installation, those three sites will not be reservable. Each site will have two 12 x 12 metal corrals with gates. Some tie stalls will remain, depending on the site.

Corrals will be delivered on Monday, September 14. Gravel will be delivered on Tuesday, September 15. Gravel leveling and site preparation will begin that day.

All three sites should be completed by Thursday evening and available for reservations starting Friday, September 18, if everything goes as planned. We will do our best to keep you up to date. Check Facebook for information.

Friends of Maplewood volunteers and DNR staff will be working on site at horse camp during that time. Trucks, tractors, and equipment will be moving around camp, so be aware of the activity and use extra caution when walking, driving, or riding around camp.

What a fabulous turnout for our Annual Meeting on Sept 2! Thank you to the 50+ people who came out to enjoy a fun evening at the park! We shared a great meal and then heard from our guest speakers (State Senator Jordan Rasmusson & Deputy County Administrator Nick Leonard) and Park Staff (Manager Bill Anderson & Assistant Manager Riley Finnegan). We gave a recap of 2026 highlights, sneak peak into our 2027 plan, updates on the horse grounds and Maple syrup production, and ended with a call for volunteers for upcoming Leaf Days, Oct 3 & 4!

A huge thank you to every member for being a part of the Friends group! We appreciate each one of you and hope that your involvement in Friends gives you that connection to nature that inspires us all ... one butterfly, one campfire, one leaf at a time.

Thank you to LREC for asking us to help at their Member Appreciation Event at Maplewood State Park on August 13. It was a perfect afternoon to spend at the park! We enjoyed providing the live music by Tia Thysell, guided hikes up Hallaway Hill, kayaking at the beach, maple syrup demos at the Sugar Shack, and kids' coloring projects. It was also great to partner with Dora, the park Naturalist, who helped with plant species identification as well as managing the popular DNR Track Chair. Thank you to everyone who participated in our activities!

Corrals Coming to Maplewood Horse Camp!

The Minnesota DNR has approved three sets of two-horse corrals at the horse camp in Maplewood State Park.

Each corral measures 12’ x 12’ with a 4’ gate. Two linked corrals will be installed at three sites.

Friends of Maplewood worked with Park management to develop the corrals’ specifications. “We’re working together to determine which sites are best to start with,” said Jerry Pederson of Friends of Maplewood.

Criteria for the initial selection include site size, accessibility, and terrain. In addition to the corrals, the project budget includes gravel and site preparation.

Approximately $10,000 was approved for the project, with additional funds available for gravel.

“Fabrication of the corrals will go out on bids over the next couple of weeks,” said Bill Anderson. “We’re hoping for completion of site prep and installation by park staff and volunteers yet this fall.”

The warm air and cool breeze made for a perfect evening for about 60 people to enjoy music at Maplewood State Park. People sang along to the music of Off the Hook, and some even danced. Thank you to the musicians who entertained us and thank you to everyone that came out to enjoy the evening. Special thanks to Judith E. for organizing the event and introducing the band.
