Somebody's gotta tackle this problem, right? I adore Fava beans and planted them in the same spot, which in retrospect was a huge blunder. This year they're struggling and I consulted my agricultural guru Walker Miller Ph D. He yanked out a root and now I'm aware I'm hosting Root knot nematodes, nasty microscopic worms that plague roots. Apparently they're more prevalent here in SC's warm sandy soil than anywhere else. It turns out they're a common commercial agriculture nuisance. But get this, the one thing that really bugs them is shrimp shells! It's a stinky job but someone's gotta eat them!
