Somebody's gotta tackle this problem, right? I adore Fava beans and planted them in the same spot, which in retrospect was a huge blunder. This year they're struggling and I consulted my agricultural guru Walker Miller Ph D. He yanked out a root and now I'm aware I'm hosting Root knot nematodes, nasty microscopic worms that plague roots. Apparently they're more prevalent here in SC's warm sandy soil than anywhere else. It turns out they're a common commercial agriculture nuisance. But get this, the one thing that really bugs them is shrimp shells! It's a stinky job but someone's gotta eat them!

When attempting a novel endeavor, the outcome is never certain. A prime illustration of this concept is cultivating grapevines. Despite adhering to expert guidelines, the results can be unexpectedly rewarding, as evidenced by this year's exceptional harvest. Upon closer inspection, one can observe the abundance of young grapes. Rocky, the vineyard's feline companion, continues to demonstrate his affection for being present during fertilization, pruning, and soil amendment tasks.

This April, our vineyard farm is bursting at the seams with new life, thanks to planting and preparations that are truly earth-friendly—and true to form, we're celebrating Earth Month in style! A massive thank you to our dirt-welcoming volunteers who worked doing manual labor; their enthusiasm and hard work made all the difference. These women didn't let a little thing like dirt stop them. Thank you!

Diversity is the key for our farm as we are always thinking about the soil. Diversifying the crops we grow is good for the bees 🐝 foraging and also important for the birds and other animals.
In the vineyard this year we have crimson clover growing and yellow mustard growing. They both have a strong root system. They are an important amendment to the red clay soil that we have here in SC. The beauty of those two ground cover crops for the vineyard is that they break up our hard clay soil.
Our objective, as always, is to provide a healthy environment in the vineyard, enhancing our food system for growing grapes at reasonable prices.
