“Death is inevitable. All of us will die, sooner or later.”

It sounds heavy, but this exercise isn’t about being morbid, it’s about waking up. In the rush of modern life, we spend so much energy trying to maintain our “main character” energy that we forget the one truth that connects every single human being on this planet: our time is finite.

By sitting with the reality of our own end, we stop living for the next milestone and start living for the present. When you realize that everything you have, your possessions, your status, your “to-do” list, can’t follow you, you’re left with the only thing that matters: being here, right now.

You are very much alive. Your body is functioning. You have a chance to show up today. Don’t waste it. Futurific Alua Arthur

One of the most asked questions I receive is “What should I say to my grieving friend?”

The short answer...there’s no “right” thing to say. Language is imperfect and the grieving process is individual.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is offer the gift of your presence if they want your company. And other times the acknowledgment that the situation is really fu***ng sh*tty will show love.

Was there something particularly useful someone said to you while you were deep in grief? 💜

07/21/2026

To be alive and to be human means to constantly be living in some sort of grief. That doesn’t mean that it can’t coexist with your joy and passion and curiosity and wonder. But there’s generally always gonna be some kind of grief swimming underneath the surface.

Some ways to help root it are to try to understand what has been lost, what version of yourself is dying, or what is dying. And through that exploration, you may begin to find that grief is always there - it just may not be in our present conscious awareness at the time. To be alive and to be human is to constantly be in a state of change experiencing the cycle of death and grief and rebirth ova and ova and ova again.

Thank you for giving me a minute of your life to think about the end of it. How is your grief showing up today? 🙏🏿💜⏳

Woweeee!! Check out this lineup for our upcoming Death Doula Training Alumni Summit! Maybe we’re biased, but we truly believe our alumni are some of the dopest death doulas (and HUMANS!) around. 💀🙌🏿🤩

We’re humbled beyond words to be able to create this play space where we can gather to share our gifts, honor our grief, celebrate our JOY, deepen our connections, and continue learning from each other for this fully alumni led event. 💜

If this gathering is calling your name, hollerrr! We’ve got fewer than 10 spaces open. And whether you’re joining us or not, pleaseeeee take a moment to check out these incredible humans and the work they’re doing in the world. They’re the real bosses. 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿

Together, let’s continue shifting the way we live and the way we die.

This week we are landing after our 12th Death Doula Training Retreat in Virginia (at the same venue Dirty Dancing was filmed)—and yes, we most definitely had the time of our lives!!! 💃🏿🕺🏿🪩

We laughed and cried and ate and laughed and cried. We frolicked in nature and met baby birds, bunnies, deer, raccoons, a possum…and ZERO bears. 🐻

We relished in the magical combo of sunshine meeting a cool mountain breeze as it danced through the trees, and were gifted a summer thunderstorm!! Magical, y’all! 🌳🌲✨

Some of us fed our 7 year old selves by having A TIME riding golf carts at every opportunity we could. And those same someones are holding space this week for their disenfranchised golf cart grief. 💔

We shared our weirds, our grief, our JOY, our gifts, our experiences, and allowed ourselves the PROFOUND gift of being witnessed in our full expressions of humanness. And then we celebrated as only death doulas could.

We love you retreat 12!! Thank YOU for being so wonderfully weird and for trusting us to meet you exactly where you are as you went allllll in for yourselves—and ultimately for everyone whose lives you’ll impact. Nobody puts Retreat 12 in a corner.

Wanna join the ride? We’ve only got a few spaces left for our August retreat in Nashville, TN and October retreat in Manhattan Beach, CA.

Come have the time of your life with us as we learn how to support others at the end of theirs. 💜💫💀

I recently celebrated my 48th birthday, and as I honor this latest trip around the sun, I’ve been reflecting a lot on my experience of living in a body and invite you to join me. (Cue Megan THEE Stallion and a moment of silence for my droppin’ it low knees.)

Next week on June 11, I’m hosting a free, one-hour webinar, Birthdays, Bodies & Being Human, as a place for us to reflect on our relationship with our bodies—to honor them, listen to them, thank them, and maybe even trust them a little more deeply as they carry us through life.

Come as you are. Bring your questions, your resistance, your grief, your gratitude, and your beautiful aging body-ody-ody. ✨🤸🏿‍♀️💃🏿💜

Hello and welcome to my series (this is only the second one), you may be a death doula if…

Where I share the top traits in the almost 3,000 death doulas we’ve trained at Going with Grace to share what makes them effective at the work. And by effective, I mean folks that are able to serve people without inserting themselves too deeply into the process. Okay, here we go… this one may be controversial.

You may be a death doula if… you are willing to be one who does not know. 💀🤸🏿‍♀️✨

As a death doula, I hang out right at the crux of the greatest mystery to ever exist—what happens after we die. I journey with people allllllll the way to the gateway of existence, and my clients cross the threshold and carry on and find out, and I gotta turn back. And in all of history, nobody who has ever been all the way there has turned around and come all the way back.

I’m not talking about the near death experience people who made out with death and came back. I mean the dead dead people.

When I am one who knows, sometimes I invalidate the experience of my clients because it doesn’t make space for them to believe whatever they want to. It also doesn’t allow me to reflect back what they’re saying when they’re gonna find out pretty soon. When I’m one who knows, I have a hard time holding possibility because it’s hard to know something and hold potential for the unknown infinite possibilities. When I’m one who knows, I also place myself at a strange place of being human because part of the human condition is to dance consistently with the unknown.

Nobody knows what’s going to happen every second or every minute. Nobody knows what happens after we die. And as a death doula, we gotta be okay not knowing.

But can you actually hold the big “I don’t knows”? If so, come play with us! (✨And if you need additional community support to join us, we’ve got you. Scholarship applications for the online July training are open May 22–29✨) Maybe you’re a death doula.

Thanks so much for giving me a minute of your life to think about the end of it. And Steve Biko on my shirt for all you curious humans out there (ps. You may be a deat
