Kind of gross 🀒 A lot of offices use these color bands to identify certain handpieces for certain operatories. This is what can accumulate under those bands. I don't think anyone would want this in their mouth. Even after sterilization.

FYI....Don't drop your handpieces!!! It never fails, they'll land on the head every time and dent. Most handpieces are made of soft brass that have an electroplate coating. Here we have a KaVo ComfortDrive XDR200 1:5 speed increaser attachment. The dent put pressure on the rear head bearing. As you can see in photo 2, this caused the bearing to fail. We disassembled the handpiece, reshaped the head, replaced the bearings and rescued this very expensive handpiece. We are the only on-site handpiece repair service in The Western New York area. Give us a call if you would like a free repair estimate. 716-868-6121

How many times have you heard?...."it can't be fixed. You'll have to get a new one". Well, here's an example of why you get a second opinion. This motor was tagged "can NOT repair". My customer was going to toss it. I suggested letting us take a look at it before sending it out with the trash. Turns out it was just two loose screws. We tightened them back into position and the motor runs just fine. We just saved our customer the cost of this motor which is well over $1,000.00. Our charge....$49.00. Do yourself a money saving favor and get a second opinion before opening up your checkbook.

Be careful with your handpieces. This is what happens when they're dropped on a hard surface. Before and after pics of dent removal. It doesn't look too severe but that little dent put so much pressure on the rear bearing that it couldn't rotate the spindle. Most are made of coated brass and dent easily. This is an example of one that we repaired. Luckily it was able to be saved. Otherwise this would have been a $400 or more replacement.

Don't wipe your handpieces down with chemical wipes or sprays. When the liquid from these products infiltrates and dries, your left with these gritty crystals in the first picture which then tear up your bearings and other moving components. Isopropyl alcohol is best for wiping down and disinfecting. Your autoclave with do the rest. Here are the before and after turbine repair pictures of a handpiece that's been wiped down repeatedly with chemical wipes.

Here we see two sets of highspeed handpiece bearings. The set on the right are brand new bearings made by Myonic. The set on the left are out of a recent repair. The lower bearing cage has completely disintegrated. If you zoom in on the top bearing, you can see that the bearing cage has cracked (at 6 o'clock) from fatigue.

This is a rotor out of an air driven low speed hygiene motor. These types of low speed motor rotors are found in either the doctors or hygienists operatories. The picture on the left is of a motor that has not been cared for. These motors need regular maintenance just like highspeeds. When not lubricated on a regular basis, this is the result. Build up of debris which wears away at the rotor vane blades, rotor housing and bearings causing motor failure. The second picture is the rotor cleaned and ready for reassembly with new vane blades and bearings. The CDC recommends that any motor that can be removed from the tubing should be sterilized between each patient. If you sterilize between each patient, you should be lubricating as well. Regular maintenance will clean the internals and keep your motor running much longer between repairs.
