Water Safety: Simple Steps That Save Lives:
By Smart Hearts CPR & Safety

Arizona summers mean sunshine, backyard pools, lake trips, and family vacations. While spending time in the water creates wonderful memories, it also comes with serious risks. The good news is that most water-related tragedies are preventable with proper supervision, preparation, and education.

Whether you're relaxing by the pool, visiting a water park, or enjoying a day at the lake, these simple water safety tips can help keep everyone safe.

Drowning Happens Faster Than Most People Realize

Many people imagine drowning as a dramatic event with yelling and splashing. In reality, drowning is often silent. A child can slip underwater in less than 30 seconds without making a sound.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death for young children. Adults are also at risk, particularly around lakes, rivers, and boating activities.

Designate a "Water Watcher"

One of the easiest ways to improve safety is to assign a dedicated Water Watcher.

This person should:

Watch swimmers continuously.
Stay off their phone.
Avoid reading or other distractions.
Not consume alcohol while supervising.
Be close enough to reach young children immediately.

Rotate Water Watcher duties every 15-20 minutes so everyone stays alert.

Layers of Protection Save Lives

No single safety measure is enough. Think of water safety as multiple layers of protection:

Four-sided fencing with self-closing, self-latching gates around pools
Pool alarms when available
Locked doors leading to pool areas
Life jackets for inexperienced swimmers and during boating activities
Adult supervision at all times
Swimming lessons appropriate for age and ability

The more layers you have, the safer everyone will be.

Swimming Lessons Are Important—but Not Foolproof

Swimming lessons help children gain confidence and important skills, but even strong swimmers can become tired, panic, or experience medical emergencies.

Never assume that someone is "safe" simply because they know how to swim.

Keep Rescue Equipment Nearby

Every pool should have:

A reaching pole
A life ring or flotation device
A fully stocked first aid kit
A charged cell phone for emergencies

Knowing where these items are—and how to use them—can make all the difference.

Learn CPR Before an Emergency Happens

When someone is pulled from the water and isn't breathing, every second matters.

Immediate CPR can help circulate oxygen-rich blood until emergency responders arrive. Early CPR significantly improves the chances of survival and can reduce the risk of permanent brain injury.

CPR isn't just for healthcare professionals. Parents, grandparents, babysitters, coaches, teachers, and anyone around children should know what to do during those critical first few minutes.

Water Safety Tips for Lakes and Rivers

Natural bodies of water present additional hazards:

Wear a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket.
Never swim alone.
Watch for changing currents and underwater hazards.
Stay hydrated and protect yourself from heat illness.
Avoid alcohol while swimming or operating watercraft.
Check weather conditions before heading out.
Teach Children Safe Water Habits

Help children develop good habits by teaching them to:

Ask permission before entering the water.
Never run near pools.
Never push others into the water.
Stay away from drains and pool suction outlets.
Swim with a buddy whenever possible.
Tell an adult immediately if someone is in trouble.
Be Prepared—Not Scared

Water should be fun, not frightening. Most water emergencies can be prevented through supervision, preparation, and education.

Taking a CPR class is one of the best investments you can make for your family, workplace, or community. You may never need those skills—but if you do, you'll be prepared to act confidently when every second counts.
