Don’t Get Fooled: Protect Yourself, Your Family & Your Business

Scam texts, suspicious emails, fake tech support calls, and hacked accounts can affect anyone. Join Stacy and Keith Brooks, CEO and COO of SKB Cyber, for a practical, approachable presentation on protecting yourself at home and at work.

We’ll cover how to recognize common scams, protect your passwords and accounts, use phones and social media safely, and keep your devices updated. You’ll also learn what to do if you click a suspicious link or think you’ve been scammed.

No technical experience is needed. Bring your questions and leave with simple steps you can put into practice right away. We’ll stay afterward to answer individual questions and share a preview of SKB Tech Care, launching in November.

It has been a BIG week at SKB Cyber!

Our CEO, Stacy Brooks, spent part of the week in Houston for the NAWBO Chapter Leadership Council Retreat, focused on conflict resolution, leadership, and bringing chapters together. One highlight was a visit to NASA, where Julie Strickland shared her story and the challenges she faced as a female aerospace engineer. It was an incredible and empowering experience!

And now we are turning that energy toward something happening right here at home.

Traveling? Give your phone a restart along the way.

When you travel out of your local area, your phone may connect to different cellular networks, airport and hotel Wi-Fi, rental cars, Bluetooth devices, and other unfamiliar technology.

Why restart?

Turning your phone completely off and back on ends many active processes and network connections. It can disrupt certain types of malicious activity that rely on staying active in memory, and it gives your device a clean opportunity to reconnect to trusted networks.

The NSA has recommended periodically powering smartphones off and back on as one simple mobile-security practice. It won’t prevent every attack, but when you’re traveling and connecting in more places than usual, it’s an easy extra layer of protection.

So when you stop for the night, give your phone a restart too. It takes less than a minute.

This event is especially meaningful to me and truly close to our hearts. I am grateful for the work the American Heart Association does for survivors, families, and communities throughout Central Illinois.

A Cyber Attack Might Start With a Phone Call
We spend a lot of time warning people not to click suspicious links, but cyberattacks don’t always start with an email.
Hackers may pose as security professionals, organizations, or MFA verification systems to gain unauthorized access to your account. Currently, Google is warning users about scammers impersonating Google Account Security (https://support.google.com/faqs/answer/2952493?hl=en). For example, attackers may call and say there’s a problem with your account, then ask for a verification code or tell you to approve a login request.
Google says they will not call you about your account security or ask for your password or verification codes over the phone.
The rise in social engineering incidents acts as a good reminder for businesses to talk with employees about more than phishing emails. Suspicious phone calls, texts, login requests, and tech support calls should all be addressed in cybersecurity training.
If someone contacts you about an account problem, don’t rely on the phone number or link they provide. Go directly to the company or your IT team using contact information you already trust.
Sometimes taking an extra minute to verify something can save a company from larger problems.

Before You Call Tech Support

Computer acting up? Before calling an expert, try these few simple fixes. You may save yourself time, frustration, and money.

Start here:

* Check that your computer is plugged in, has power, and has no loose connections. It’s basic but has been the cause of several tech calls!
* Restart your computer. That’s right, turn it off and turn it back on again! It sounds too simple, but it really does solve many common problems.
* Check your internet. If something isn't loading, check whether other devices are experiencing the same issue. Your computer may not be the culprit!
* Look for updates (the pros call this patching). An outdated operating system, browser, or application can cause unexpected issues.

If there is a problem and you need to call a tech, make sure to explain exactly what is happening. Too often, people say “It isn’t working.” Instead, tell the tech exactly what isn’t working and what you have already tried to resolve the problem. Much like a visit to the doctor’s office, details matter.

* Read and note any error message. Take a screenshot or write it down. That information can be extremely helpful if you do need support.

One important caution: If you see unexpected pop-ups claiming your computer is infected and telling you to call a phone number, don't call it; that is often a common scam.

A few minutes of basic troubleshooting may fix the problem for free. And if it doesn't, you'll have better information to give your tech professional, which can help them solve the problem faster and potentially save you money.
