Friendly reminder…harvest season is upon us. Please be respectful of the farmers moving equipment and their loads to and fro. Be patient. Enjoy the slowness of life for bit. Give them a wave of thanks for all they do for us and receive little in return. We would not be able to exist without the great American Farmer! ❤️🙏🏻

If you’re not an early riser…let me share what you’re missing. God’s beauty in the morning is still my favorite thing out on my acreage. It’s hard keeping the phone in the pocket on mornings like this. The peace and quiet before all the activities of the day begin. The last dip of the temperatures before the sun starts warming us back up. Long shadows of the trees slowly rescinding back into their trunks. God’s beauty truly amazes me and I’m so grateful to witness it on a daily basis. Have a blessed day!

If you have timber on your land, start looking for dead trees. I’ve had my eye on this one since July.

Before the leaves start to turn their fall colors, I start looking for dead trees and get them marked. I’ll take a hike through my trees and tie a ribbon around those that aren’t going to make it.

When the cooler weather sets in and the forage isn’t as bad, I’ll work on cutting the dead trees down for future firewood. Going out now and marking the dead ones, I’ll know exactly which one to cut when the leaves have fallen off.

It’s that time of year. The garden produce is slowing down, families are getting their kids ready to go back to school, and football season is right around the corner. But for me on the acreage, this time of year triggers me to start prepping for winter. Yes, winter!

Before we know it, old man winter will be rearing it’s ugly head. Now is the time to prepare so we aren’t scrambling as the temperatures begin to drop or we’re caught off guard with an early snowfall.

Two things take top priority for me:
1. Get the fireplace professionally cleaned/inspected, and
2. Get the firewood moved/split.

There are many other things on my list but this is the most important. Specifically the fireplace inspection and cleaning. Splitting firewood and getting it moved to its proper location is always time consuming and laborious. But I don’t want to be caught without having enough and I begin this process early. So, get those fireplaces inspected/cleaned and the firewood split/stacked…winter is closer than you think.

And while you’re at it, have your dryer vents cleaned too. Let’s keep us all safe this winter.

Where are my garden growers? This is a great time of year with fresh veggies coming from your own garden. Is there anything better? I keep things pretty simple and stick to the basics mainly because they work the best for me. Don’t feel like you have to have a huge variety of veggies growing. Grow what works for you and know what you’ll be able to use or store. I hate waste out of my garden so if I don’t think I can eat it, store it, or sell it, it doesn’t get planted. There is nothing wrong with experimenting either, just be careful not to go overboard and trust what works. Happy fresh from the garden eating!
