It’s hard to not get sad and emotional when you see beautiful leaf growth changed overnight by weather.

This is farming- the worst part of it. We sustained substantial damage to many of our buds, with overnight lows near 27. While the heaters helped, they just couldn’t keep up with the close to 9 hour freeze event combined with the amount of growth we already had.

Secondary and tertiary buds should push eventually, keeping the plants going. However, they are never as fruitful (if at all) as the primary buds.

So, we look ahead to the good news- we have plenty of estate grown wine from our last several vintages to keep us- and you!- going! Also, we will focus on the fruit we will get, as little as it may be. We will know more in the next few weeks.

Thank you for all of your thoughts and well wishes. Thank you for standing with us during the best times and the most challenging times!

It’s that time of the year when we wish Mother Nature could be more predictable and boring.

After an extremely cold winter, followed by extreme 80 degree days in the last month, our vines are way ahead of schedule. Something we do not like to see, knowing frost season goes well into May. We’ve already endured a 23 degree night several weeks ago, which did not fare well to our Petit Manseng and Pinotage vines. And now we are anticipating another below freezing night tonight.

We’ve prepared as much as possible. Tiling the land, investing in heaters, all to save our vintage. One that is just beginning, but which weather can put a quick dent in all before it truly starts.

This is grape growing. A passion, a love. And one that tears at your emotions when the possibility of losing it is in sight.

Let’s hope the forecast isn’t as bad. And that tomorrow, we will still see these beautiful Marquette vines as vibrant as they were this evening.
