This is how it all started.

With a 4 & 2 year old in the house, we naturally had a LOT of toys. I worked night shift and the kids had a full array of entertainment to keep them busy when I was just completely sleep deprived. But I found that we always spent more time cleaning up the mess than the kids actually spent intentionally playing with everything.

I gathered every single toy in the house and brought it to this room and was just horrified by the quantity. The kids didn’t need it all or even want it! So toy by toy my 4 year old and I sorted through. Anything broken was thrown away. The rest we sorted through and decided what we loved and wanted to keep versus what needed to be passed along to another family. We ended up editing out around 2/3 of the items!

The kids still had plenty to play with and actually played with them more after that. It was simple and easier to clean up and we honestly were all SO much happier because of it.

Kids grow and interests change but we have been able to keep the values we learned here alive. Less is definitely more. Having special items you love is great & even better when you don’t have to push aside a bunch of things you don’t actually use or care about. It took longer keeping my 4 year old involved in the process but then he learned from it and took the skill of letting go with him.
