What does new heat bring? Swarming termites!

12/30/2021

Today I typed our 500th report for this year. The pandemic has not slowed us down!

Rain brings water for our plants, that fall feeling, and.....subterranean termite swarms! You may have noticed them flying in your yard, getting caught in spider webs, hanging out on your porch, or even getting into your house. They surrounded my car while waiting at a light on Caulfield. They were all around Dan in a yard of a house he was inspecting yesterday. Yet, he found no evidence of a termite infestation in the house. So, if you see swarmers in or around your house, see if you can find anywhere that they are coming out of, such as your baseboards, window sills, or flooring. If you are really concerned, give us a call and we can do an inspection.

We are saddened to learn of the passing of Glen Hurley. As Glen was one of our longest realtor clients, we had built up a good working and personal relationship. We will miss seeing and hearing from him. Our condolences to his family.

Termites! This week I've had many people calling me about termite sightings. I've also seen people posting pictures and videos on Facebook. But don't panic! Termites have swarming seasons, which are influenced by humidity, rain, and changes in weather. You can tell by the calls and posts that we are in a current season. Remember that termites, like other insects, spiders, rodents, and other animals are part of our ecosystem. They exist in our environment and can not be eliminated completely. You really have little to worry about if they are outside, whether crawling around or flying. 98% or swarmers do not survive long. Remember that termites' purpose is to break down rotten wood. Take precautions not to have wood piles or fences abut your structure. Check around your house to see if you notice rotten wood, or damage that could have been caused by termites. Look for mud tubes travelling up the siding or piles of "sawdust" in window sills or other places. If you think you see damage or tubes, give us a call to check it out.

Happily, many people are able to return to their homes today. Again, we saw how community pulls together to support one another in times of hardship. There are so many to thank: first responders, (many of whom came from out of state!), volunteers in shelters, businesses that donated to evacuees, P.G. & E. employees, and so many more. What was especially heartwarming was to see so many small business and individuals donating time and money to help others out, even at a cost to their own well being. Please remember to support the small businesses in your area. They are your neighbors, they are your community, they are you!

I'm going to start doing some frequently asked questions here.
Remember to feel free to ask questions.
FAQ: Why didn't you include the rat infestation on your report?
ANSWER: Many people don't realize that there are three branches of pest control: Branch I is fumigations, Branch II is general pest, Branch III is structural pest. Each branch holds a different license. We are Branch III only. The state does not allow us to identify, make recommendations, or do any remedial treatments for general pests, (including spiders, rats, mice, fleas, wasps, etc.) Similarly, a Branch II operator or a home inspector can not identify termites, beetles, etc. The state is very clear on what each licensee is allowed to do. But if you do have a general pest issue, we can recommend some great Branch II companies!

It's that time of year again...Petaluma's rite of spring: The Butter and Eggs Day Parade. Dan always cooks for the Lion's Club in the morning and then walks with the Native Sons in the parade. I'll be walking with the Petaluma Rocks group. Say "Hi!" if you see us this Saturday!

It's that time again: Time to celebrate Petaluma's history and at the same time the current community. Look for Dan cooking at the 7-11 Lions Club breakfast, and then later walking in the parade with the Native Sons of the Golden West. Community service has always been an important aspect of our lives. See you there!

It's probably not a coincidence that Veteran's Day follows only a few days after Election Day. We enjoy the freedoms to vote or to not vote. We can let it be known if we agree or disagree with the outcome of an election. We are able to peacefully protest in the streets to make a point, if we so desire. In our country, all of us have a voice and a right to express it. Tomorrow is a day to remember why we have those freedoms, to remember the people who have fought and/or given up their lives for this county. All Americans will never agree on everything, but we can be respectful. Let's show our honor to our country, our veteran's, and our fellow Americans. Come to the Veteran's Day parade in Petaluma and wave your American flag!

A woman just hung up on me because "I just want to know the price for an inspection." Well, we have a range of prices, based on the extent of an inspection. While trying to determine what she needed, she said she would just use someone else and hung up. All services have a range of prices, and I will do my best to figure out how we can best serve you.

Due to a fiber optics cable cut in San Jose, there is a major outage of A.T. & T phone lines. We have not had service since Saturday morning, and don't know when service will be restored. If you need to contact us, please email [email protected], or message us through Facebook. Thank you.
