Busy day at Giant Steps!!
We found a little white line disease today in one the older horses Scarlett! She got a cold or something a while back and the bacteria got past her resistance.
Over 300 cases in last fifteen years using this method. It works a treat! She can go right back to work and be comfortable!
Thank you Sarah Logie FWCF for leading us to this treatment!

Desmitis occurs when a ligament is strained, inflamed, or damaged. Repetitive strain, poor confirmation, and fatigue all contribute to desmitis. The most common ligaments strained ,we as Farriers deal with are collateral ligaments and suspensory ligaments. The use of adding bearing surface for supporting healing. This method helps limit flexion of the damaged area while in a deformable substrate. The collateral shoe and the suspensory style shoe are the main ones used for up to 9 months. Once ligaments are healed the style of shoe is changed to something more appropriate.

Years ago I met Dr Eustace he developed a reliable measurement for gauging the progression of founder recovery.
Founder distance is the vertical distance between the top of the hoof wall border and the top of the extensor process of the distal phalanx. A distance of less than 14mm usually has success rate, after 14mm a much less rate of success. This distance scale is a much more consistent indicator than the hoof wall/distal phalanx rotation.

Chronic lamanitis:
The phase of lamanitis that follows the acute phase. It is associated with displacement of the distal phalanx relative to the hoof capsule and the ensuing changes in the shape of the hoof capsule. There is alterations to the normal pattern of hoof horn production from the coronary, lamellar, and solar regions of the foot. Which leads to the development of a distorted hoof capsule. This occurs because the damage to the lamellar interface is so extensive that the SUSPENSORY APPARATUS OF THE DISTAL PHALANX can no longer maintain normal anatomical relationship between the hoof capsule, dermis, and distal phalanx, resulting in lameness!

Sam Durham, CJF, dipWCF was in Canada along with Hank Chisholm to be a clinician for the first ever pre-cert hosted in Ontario.

Sam's discussion about the suspensory apparatus and distal phalanx was enlightening. Take a moment to listen to his insights here 🎧 ⬇️
