Mips stands for Multi-Directional Impact Protection System. It uses a low-friction layer inside the helmet designed to allow 10–15mm of multi-directional movement during certain angled impacts.

Falls often involve angled impacts, which can create rotational motion in the head. The Mips system is designed to help manage those forces and reduce rotational motion transferred to the brain.
