To be sold in our June 21 auction: An Artisan Goose Bowl, 1970’s League of New Hampshire Craftsmen

We’re on a wild goose chase trying to figure out the artist’s attribution for this cool piece. Our consignor recalls that the bowl was made and purchased from a woman who was active in the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, but lived just out of state, either in Vermont or Massachusetts. Any ideas?

Charles Wadsworth grew up in the New York City suburb of Ridgewood, NJ. Between 1937 and 1941 he worked for The American People’s School in the Bronx; he took classes from Carl Nelson and attended the Art Students League where he studied under Nicolaides and Kunioshi.  Wadsworth was a conscientious objector during WW2 and married in late 1945.  A few years later he bought land on Cranberry Island off the coast of Maine, where he would end up building a house and spending summers. Wadsworth is considered the first of the late 20th century Cranberry Isles artists. He exhibited in Boston at the Margaret Brown Gallery and at the Boris Mirski Gallery, and taught painting and printmaking at the Commonwealth School from 1957-1974. In the 1970’s, Wadsworth published books of poetry with the Godine Press in Brookline, MA.

Domus Aurea, Nero’s Golden Palace. Engraving by J. Blundell

“Nero was the last of the Julio-Claudian dynasty that took Rome from Republic to one-man rule. Raised amidst violence and tyranny, he ruled with ludicrous vanity, demented whimsy and inept despotism. Few mourned his abdication and death amidst the chaos that he had himself created.” Simon Montefiore

Jackson Lee Nesbitt (1913-2008) Hot Metal - Sheffield Steel Corporation, 1940

In the late 1930’s the Sheffield Steel Corporation contacted the Kansas City Art Institute looking for talented young artists to depict their operations. John de Martelly and Nesbitt were recommended, but the former declined on account of the extreme heat. Nesbitt, however, had an affinity for the place, making repeat sketching visits over the course of the late 1930’s and 1940’s, making over 20 images. We’re delighted to offer this etching, as well as “Sheet and Plate Mill, 1938” in our June auction.

Warrington Colescott (1921-2018) Rembrandt Bankrupt, 1977

Soft-ground etching and aquatint, 22/75, editioned, titled, inscribed, signed and dated in pencil.

One of many 20th century American prints to be sold in our June 21 auction of fine art, jewelry and antiques; catalog in production.

Colescott was a master printmaker, who along with his wife Frances Myers, operated the Mantegna Press in Hollandale, Wisconsin. Colescott taught at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1949 to 1986; he studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris and was a Fulbright Fellow at the Slade School of Fine Art in London.

This satirical image comes from his series The History of Printmaking (1975-78), in which Colescott reimagines critical moments in the history of printmaking.
