Leadership Paradox #5: Trust and Accountability

Most people work better without a close supervision, we all want to feel that our boss trusts us, we want to be empowered and independent, this is for sure better than the alternative of micro-management and having our boss checking on how much progress we have made every five minutes.

On the other hand, we need guidance, support, results need to be delivered; timings and budgets need to be respected and other areas need to count on our very best work.

This powerful leadership paradox starts with the manager/leader giving his/her trust to the team or collaborator, giving your trust means putting yourself in the hands of someone that can and that cares.

The second part of the combination is to hold the team or collaborator accountable, demand the best, the highest standards, and constantly offer support, guidance and help with complexity, politics, resources or roadblocks.

Trust and accountability is the sweet spot between empowerment and delivery of outstanding results.

Leadership Paradox #2: Purpose and Pragmatism

Purpose and pragmatism is a powerful paradox and combination that multiplies each of these two aspects of leadership; if one part of the combination is absent the risk of the other one taking over is high, the leader needs master the balance between them.


Purpose without pragmatism can derive into a deep philosophical and romantic leadership style, and environment where everybody is inspired but nothing really happens, everybody talks, reflects, and feels, and very little gets done.

Pragmatism without purpose results on shallow leadership, the team will eventually lose the long term thrive and momentum, these leaders focus only on the task.

Fast decisions and results without a clear moral compass and a clear sense of purpose can be effective and get short term results but cannot get the best from the team, they will just perform to the extent the leader is there providing instructions.

The balance the leader should try to master is to move fast, decide, guide, trust and delegate, achieve the next milestone, get the number…, but always with the purpose and principles as the framework of the decision made, always for them, never against them.

Lo urgente tiene la horrible costumbre de interponerse en el camino de lo importante.

¿No tienes tiempo? ¿Demasiado trabajo? ¿No has podido priorizar?, ¿siempre corriendo a solucionar lo urgente?… tal vez no has hecho el tiempo para priorizar, para organizar tu trabajo, para que tengas tiempo, para que lo importante se adelante a lo urgente.

Por supuesto que hay emergencias, por supuesto que todos tenemos que atender “cosas” urgentes, el problema es cuando las emergencias toman el 80% o más de tu tiempo.

Si miras hacia atrás y así ha sido durante los últimos meses, si te encuentras persiguiendo incendios y emergencias la mayor parte del tiempo, ten cuidado, es posible que dentro de un año te encuentres mirando hacia atrás, sintiéndote cansado, pensando que has trabajado muy duro, pero no satisfecho, menos sano, distraído y hasta un poco triste.

La palabra prioridad proviene del latín prior que significa lo que viene antes en tiempo, orden o importancia.

La respuesta es bastante sencilla y a la vez difícil: Decide y define qué es importante para ti -literalmente, defínelo, escríbelo- y hazlo primero.

A long term vision, an unbreakable belief of what we can be together, in what is possible, in a meaningful tomorrow, should guide our decisions and actions every day.
When we decide and act based just on what we see in front of us, without that long term vision, we are walking with no direction and will very likely get lost.
