Allison's Roadside

Allison's Roadside I've been running the roadside service for a couple of years now, doing light service (Jumpstarts, Fuel Delivery, Tire Changes, Lockouts, and Winch-Outs).

On Monday, February 23, 2026, I took it to the next level and bought a rollback tow truck!

Last week, this had US-45 (Just north of WI-17) all goofed up for a while. Certainly nothing that I could do with it, and even Ott's big Freightliner wasn't going to do it alone. Nope, that was definitely a job for Kumbier Towing and their big heavy-duty truck.

I drove ig trucks for the better part of 20 years, and I have NO CLUE what this guy was thinking. Passing by (after Kumbier got there) it was obvious that he was trying to either back down that gravel drive, or at the bare minimum, backing in so that he could turn around and head south. Either way, he certainly missed his mark...
Why he'd try to blindside back off of a 55-mph with no spotter is beyond me.

Kumbier had already been out there for a bit as I passed by (heading south on 45) on my way to the south end of Minocqua. I drove the last 37 miles to Ge**er in Minocqua, offloaded the car, and was back to downtown St. Germain when I passed Kumbier's wrecker heading home.

I had some minor "oopses" back in the day, but thank God I never had to call the boss for something like that, and I'd hate to see the price tag for that recovery!.

It's been a long, cold, and busy winter, and it still doesn't seem to want to let go. I know one thing though... Saturday (May 2, 2026) is Opening Day for fishing. I managed to fish until November 4th last year, but even with that, it's still been six months since my boat hit the water. Way. Too. Long.

I think it's supposed to be around 32 degrees Saturday morning at daybreak (high of about 56), but I am bound and determined to have that boat on the lake. The batteries are charged, the rods & reels are re-strung, and the tackle boxes are stocked and (sort of) reorganized.

Who else is hitting the water this weekend? Whoever you may be... good luck out there!

One thing about having a Towing and recovery business… I meet some of the coolest and nicest people on some of their worst days. I met two of them today., when at 1:30 PM, I got a call from a younger guy (mid 20s) who was losing his mind after a disastrous day with not one, but a pair, of UTVs. M

They knew better than to ride on the trails, as they aren’t open yet, so they decided to go have fun on some infrequently traveled dirt roads that were perfectly legal for them to be on.

I’m guessing it started out as a fun day anyway… A lot of curves, a lot of hills, tons of mud with deep mud puddles, did every once in a while, just to switch it up, snow, ice, and slush… basically and off-roading jackpot.

Until…

One of them flipped over on its side in a section of the road that still had a bunch of snow and ruts (fortunately, no injuries or vehicle damage). Well, I suppose he’ll always remember his first time driving a UTV… and no, I’m not kidding… it really was his first time.

As for the other one, they managed to burn the clutch up, while trying to fix the rollover. They were able to get that one out of the woods and back onto the road, but that one was gonna need to get towed a couple of miles back to their place. I was more than willing to help, but there was just one problem… My truck happened to be partially disassembled at the time, getting new tires and shocks installed.

The caller insisted that a four-wheel-drive truck in a strap should be able to take care of both uprighting the one vehicle, and towing/pulling the other one. They tried calling a bunch of other places as well, but they couldn’t get any response from anybody, so I told him I would take my Silverado out there to see what I could do.

Pulling the first one a mile and a half or so back to their house was easy with a toe rope. We got that one dropped off and then went back after the one flipped over in the woods. We managed to get that thing out of there, but dear lord, there was more than a few times I thought I was gonna end up having to call Bulldog to come get us both out.

They were almost four miles in from the time I got off the pavement, and by the time I got back to the pavement, it looked like I was the one that decided to go mudding today.

Having been laying on its side for so long, that thing was smoking like crazy from all the oil that it seeped anywhere and everywhere in the engine. After I got it back on its wheels, we even waited about 20 minutes to give all of the oil a chance to settle back into the drain van before he started it. I told him I’d follow them back to the house, just in case, but it made it.

It’s always great when people can find at least some humor in their own misfortune, and the humor today between those two was priceless. After I helped them get the machines back in the garage, they still had a sled sitting outside that needed to go in there as well.

The kid who originally called me, looked at his buddy and said, “So, do you think you can manage to get the snowmobile in the garage without rolling that over too?”

Without missing a beat, that kid replied, “At least my UTV still runs because the clutch still works.” 😂😂😂

At this point, you just sort of pray that it doesn’t decide to move forward or backward…. 😂😂

This was from last week, and boy, did this guy get lucky. He got sucked up into a rut of ice and /which told him hard to the right. He went over one small snow pile at the end of the driveway, shot across the driveway and went up onto the big plow pile where the driveway met the road. Just a few miles faster and he would’ve gone completely over the snowbank and down into a deep ditch.

Fortunately, we should be without snow in the next week or so. 🤞

No calls as of 5:00 AM on Saturday (4/4/26), but it's definitely ugly out there! Stay safe today.

After I received our DOT, MC, and LC numbers (needed for interstate and intrastate operating authority), I began receiving literally hundreds of spam calls and text messages from freight Dispatch services, places wanting to sell me electronic log devices, and so on.

The problem is, all of those numbers that I was issued by the state of Wisconsin and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration are a matter of public record, so every spam caller from various third-world countries continues to hound me, despite the fact that the word “Roadside” in the business name should indicate that I don’t haul freight.

My first spam call of the day came in at 8:30 this morning, and as soon as the phone screen read "Potential Spam," I came up with an idea that was guaranteed to aggravate the caller as much as their call aggravated me. (I only WISH that I could upload the phone call to Facebook!!! 🤣🤣🤣)

The first guy was so confused by my response, that he transferred me to his "Senior Call Representative...". I told them that because we received so many calls from so many dispatch places, with so, so many great money making opportunities, that I had to record the conversations to keep things straight. I then proceeded to tell the "Big Boss" that I also started charging for phone consultations, at the rate of $150 per hour, as my time was valuable.

Before he could reply, I jumped in and added, "If your call would only take 15 minutes or less, it would be $37.50." I mumbled out loud as I tapped on the keyboard after bringing my calculator up... "OK, so $37.50... plus sales tax of 5.5% equals $2.06. That's $39.56... The credit card fee is 3.5%, so $1.38 plus $39.56... $40.94. OK, sir, the total for 15 minutes would be $40.94, but that does include the sales tax and credit card fee. If you'd like to proceed, I accept debit and credit, Mastercard, Visa and American Express."

He replies, "Well this should only take a few minutes, is there still a charge?"

"Oh yes!", I replied. "I'm trying to run a business and if I can't be out in my truck because I'm talking to you, then I'm losing money. Between you and the first guy I spoke with, we're already at about 8 minutes, so if you'd like to continue, I'd be happy to take your card information..."

He said somethig to the effect of, "We're trying to make YOU money, so we can't pay for this."

I told him that without a credit card, unfortunately, I'd have to end the call, and then advised him to take my number off of their list.

That is how you own a spam caller! 😂😂

This is what happens when you have too much “Ram” and not enough “DODGE.”

Apparently, from what I was told, the concrete base for the light post wasn’t painted yellow… 🤷
