In our often perceived complex and unquestionable sector, writers possess the ability to reshape our understanding of medicine and redefine what is considered acceptable, inspiring, or inhumane. To promote more impactful writing, we conceived the idea of hosting a writer's workshop for healthcare reporters during this year's  conference.

The initiative quickly and miraculously came together, supported by the . Thomas Goetz, a highly regarded figure and former editor of , as well as a two-time book author, willingly shared his expertise. Joining the cause with enthusiasm were Beth Kutscher, health editor and author of the Path to Recovery newsletter, and book marketing expert Stephanie Moon. LinkedIn generously provided their downtown community space, and .s.photography volunteered to capture photos. Invitations were extended to freelance and staff healthcare reporters covering diverse beats to participate in the workshop.

Collectively, we engaged in lively discussions about the book production process, covering aspects such as writing proposals, finding agents, testing topics, and the crucial role of marketing. We also explored careers in healthcare writing and emphasized the significance of this work. We exchanged "insider" secrets about publishing that are typically guarded, inspiring and motivating each other to persevere in our endeavors. We hope to do this again!

The stories of physicians, nurses, patients, advocates, and scientists…each with their own complex elements are often underutilized in healthcare messaging and marketing. In this conversation with our CEO Emily Peters, Mariam shares her best advice for healthcare content programs with impact — whether you’re a tiny startup or a multi-national corporation.

Just wishing for change is not enough. Even using our voices is not enough. Sometimes it’s crucial to address the problem by being the solution. Members of the know that action is what’s needed to help bridge, and more importantly eliminate, the gap in health disparities.

Last month, the consortium vaccinated 4,000 people in only a day, surpassing Philadelphia's vaccination average for this month of 3,500 first doses per day. While doing so, they also more than tripled the proportion of vaccinated Black residents than that of the city’s providers, and they’re not done yet. Working tirelessly, they are flexibly finding ways to address the harsh weather conditions, long wait times, and the registration requirements to help improve access in the Philadelphia community.

As of 03/16/2021 27,762 people have been vaccinated, “82% of who we vaccinate are people of color. 75% of whom are African-American.” -
