Philadelphia Contributionship

Philadelphia Contributionship Dependable Insurance Partners Since 1752. Philadelphia was a relatively small town in 1752 with approximately 15,000 inhabitants and 8 volunteer fire companies.

In 1752 Benjamin Franklin and his fellow firefighters founded The Philadelphia Contributionship, the nation’s oldest successful property and casualty insurance company. The company formed as a mutual insurance company, one in which policyholders would come together to share the risks, modeled after the Amicable Contributionship of London. Fire prevention elements played a large role in the plannin

g of the city; streets were wider than average and brick and stone were common building elements. Despite preventive measures and the efforts of firefighters, fires did still occur. Insurance offered a safety net and Philadelphians were quick to take advantage of it. A notice appeared in The Pennsylvania Gazette advertising the new venture in February and by April there were enough interested subscribers to hold a general meeting and elect a board of directors. By June the directors were issuing seven year renewable term policies, covering only the building. Policyholders would pay a deposit, refundable at the end of that seven year period, minus a small fee for the survey, policy and fire mark.

Did you guess correctly?

Whether it’s an AC unit or a dehumidifier, many of the devices we rely on every day are the same ones Ting's Fire Safety Team frequently identifies as potential fire hazards.

Ting is built to detect micro-arcing, the early warning signs of an electrical fire, but recognizing these common hazards is an essential step for every family.

Learn more about how each of these devices can be a potential hazard by reading Ting’s blog! https://hubs.li/Q04kkCbZ0

The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season is here, and NOAA has officially released this year’s outlook. They are predicting a slightly below-normal season with:

💧8-14 Named Storms
💧3-6 Hurricanes
💧1-3 Major Hurricanes

While this is encouraging news, we want to remind you that even in a "below-normal" year, individual storms can still have a major impact. It truly only takes one storm to change the trajectory of our season.

Don't wait for a storm to be on the radar to take action. Take a moment this week to check your backup power systems and review your emergency preparedness plan. Stay safe and stay prepared!

Did you know TPC got its first company car over 100 years ago?

In 1919, the company decided our surveyor needed a faster way to get around for inspections, so they bought a Model T Coupelet! The total cost for the car, license fees, and "high-tech" extras like a speedometer came to about $1,040. It even had our classic hand-in-hand firemark logo on the side.

We love looking back at how we’ve grown while staying true to our Philadelphia roots!
