With its 11 stripes representing the signatories of Liberia’s Declaration of Independence and its single star symbolising Liberia as Africa’s first independent republic, every element carries a piece of the country’s story.

Today, we celebrate Liberia and the story its flag continues to tell. 🇱🇷

It’s always amazing watching people arrive as strangers and, somewhere along the way, start feeling like family.

Happy Independence Day to the Republic of the Congo.

Today, we celebrate Congo-Brazzaville, a country whose story reaches far beyond the name it shares with its neighbour. On August 15, 1960, the Republic of the Congo gained independence from France, with Fulbert Youlou becoming its first president. But there’s so much more to this country’s story.

Brazzaville has a remarkable place in African history. Before independence, it served as the capital of French Equatorial Africa, and during World War II, it became the symbolic capital of Free France.

The country has also produced internationally recognized literary voices. Congolese writer Alain Mabanckou has become one of the best-known contemporary African writers, while Sony Labou Tansi was a major figure in Francophone African literature and theatre. Mabanckou’s Mémoires de porc-épic won France’s Prix Renaudot in 2006.

Today, we celebrate a nation with a distinctive cultural identity, and stories that deserve to be known on their own terms.
