团圆饭 Tuan Yuan Fan is define as reunion dinner with family held on the eve of Chinese New Year. Everyone takes time off work and travels home for this dinner. It is often considered the most important get-together meal of the entire year.

The food at the dinner depends on the region and on the family. However, there are some similarities: fish, noodles, dumplings, chicken, pork, glutinous rice cake, vegetables, and fruit like oranges and tangerines.

The Dongzhi Festival or Winter Solstice Festival is one of the most important Chinese festivals celebrated by the Mainland Chinese, Hong Kong Chinese, Taiwan, Japanese, Vietnamese, Koreans and other East Asian-related people during the Dongzhi solar term (winter solstice), some day between December 21 to December 23.

The origins of this festival can be traced back to the yin and yang philosophy of balance and harmony in the cosmos.[3] After this celebration, it is believed that days will have longer daylight hours and therefore create an increase in positive energy flowing in.

Sundown this evening marks the beginning of Hanukkah, otherwise known as the “Festival of Lights.”

The history of Hanukkah tells us that when the Maccabees retook the Second Temple in Jerusalem in what is known as the Maccabean Revolt, they sought to rededicate it under their faith. However, they only had enough oil to light the candles in the Temple for one night. Miraculously, the oil lasted for eight nights, giving the Maccabees enough time to make more oil.

This story speaks to the miracle of faith as well as teaching the importance of gratitude, community, inclusivity, remembrance, giving, perseverance, and spreading light in the world. These are not only key values in Judaism, but also serve as the pillars for how we can work together in our own communities. As Hanukkah stands to remind us with its candles upon the traditional menorah, light is something that the world needs — something we all need. But, more than that, we need to BE THE LIGHT that shines in the darkness so that others around us may share in our warmth and glow.

May this time of year be one of celebration, reflection, and light for you and your loved ones.
