in by is dedicated to the over 100,000 Dutch Jews who were murdered in the Holocaust. The Hebrew word for In Memoriam is writ in brick and topped with a reflective, floating, dynamically slashing ribbon that alters perspective and site context. The site is challenging given its proximity to a busy straat, but the change in elevation and hedge row helps. A that engages many senses and creates a unique atmosphere for reflection is a success. Here the visual complexity is the most evident sense as one moves through the labyrinth of masonry, but the sound of the gravel at your feet and the breeze through the trees provide a welcome auditory white noise. The brick’s varied surface and coloration along with the engraved names provide texture. Pools of small white rocks fulfill the bereavement ritual of leaving visitation stones.

DORTMUND BOASTS NUMEROUS LEAGUE TITLES AND HAS THE LARGEST STADIUM IN THE COUNTRY. THAT STADIUM SITS ABOUT A TWO MILES AWAY FROM THIS COVER WHICH IS FOUND IN BRASS FORM ON KAMPSTRASSE. THE CITY’S COAT OF ARMS FILLS THE CENTER SURROUNDED BY THE LOCATION AND FUNCTION CUT IN HOEFLER TEXT. THE COVER IS MADE BY A. DANNHÄUSER FOR PASSAVANT WHOSE BLOCKLETTER TYPEFACES SIT IN THE EAST AND WEST REGIONS OF THE HIGHLY ARTICULATED VENTED FRAME. AN ADDED DAB BOTTLE CAP FROM THE LOCAL BREWERY DUE NORTH OF THE STADIUM FILLS A PICKPOINT.

for Sometimes you have to take manhole cover design into your own hands. THE HEART OF THE INDUSTRIAL CORE OF THE RUHR, ESSEN PROVIDED THE COAL-BASED ENERGY FOR THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF GERMANY’S ECONOMIC AND WAR-TIME PRODUCTION. WITH THE BENEFIT OF THE ADJACENT KRUPPS FACTORY THE CITY’S POPULATION GREW DRAMATICALLY IN THE WAR YEARS TO PEAKING IN 1970 AT OVER 700,000 CITIZENS. TODAY JUST UNDER 600,000 CALL THE FOURTH LARGEST CITY OF NORTH-RHINE-WESTPHALIA HOME. ESSEN BOASTS ONE OF THE FINAL WORKS OF THE FINNISH ARCHITECT ALVAR AALTO, AN OPERA HOUSE. ESSEN IS ALSO HOME TO THE UNESCO HERITAGE SITE NO. 975-THE ZOLLVEREIN COAL MINE INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX WITH ITS ICONIC WINDING TOWER OVER SHAFT XII. THE COMPLEX ALSO HOUSES THE FANTASTIC RED DOT DESIGN MUSEUM WHICH IS HOUSED IN THE BOILER ROOM BELOW THE TOWER. DESPITE THIS AMAZING INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE WHAT ESSEN IS LACKING ARE UNIQUE MANHOLE COVERS. SADLY THE INFILL OF THE STANDARD PASSAVANT VENTED FRAMES JUST HAVE A CONCRETE INFILL. YET HERE A HAND-DRAWN ELEVATION OF THE AFOREMENTIONED TOWER AND BOILER HOUSE, REPLETE WITH THE UNIQUE ZOLLVERIEN TYPEFACE COMPLETES THE COVER. HOPEFULLY, ESSEN WILL TAKE THE HINT AND ADOPT THIS DESIGN.
