ber of the Audio Engineering Society of America, and is passionate, to a nearly obsessive degree, about his chosen field of expertise. When not actually on the clock, he spends an average of four hours a day either researching and perfecting established techniques, or attempting to devise new ones.

'My philosophy or approach as an engineer...is to leave as few sonic fingerprints as possible on the projects I'm hired to work. I see my job as helping the artist to sound as much him or herself as I'm able... I mean, in the end the client is the boss, and if they actually ASK for my recommendations I'll gladly give them. But it's not really my place to leave pieces of myself all over somebody's art, now, is it. That seems presumptuous and a mite rude. I'll work alongside the artist, and guide them toward their desired sound. If that happens to be lo-fi, mono surf-rock, then so be it: you'll get a record that sounds like a Beach Boys 7". I would love for Steve Albini to write a book on his miking techniques, though. I'd pay out all the orifices for that.
