Not all frizz is “bad.”—

For some of us, frizzy is the texture we are born with. Frizz is what makes our hair big & voluminous.

I’m a stickler for using the word in the right connotation.

So when playing your part in promoting inclusivity when discussing textured hair, remember to choose your words wisely. Your frizz is beautiful.

“Unwanted frizz” is a pain in the ass.😙

The healthier the hair the more shrinkage you will experience-

Shrinkage is a common condition on curly and coily textures because healthy, hydrated hair naturally wants to remain in its most natural state. Even when hair has been stretched or straightened the least bit of moisture that enters the cortex will continue to shrink in length. 💧

Depending on hair type and porosity some experience shrinkage in more drastic ways. Type 3 hair on average can shrink up to 50% of its original length whereas Type 4 hair can shrink 75% or MORE! This can be frustrating for those going natural and used to feeling their long hair.

But the wonderful news is there are many different methods of stretching your hair post styling that can help combat shrinkage no matter what your texture is!

In this photo I stretched my hair using my with the comb attachment and focused low heat on my roots while slightly tugging the ends. Another heatless method is loosely tying scrunchies or hair ties on mid-sections of the hair, leaving out the ends.

What is your favorite way to combat shrinkage for your hair type?

Do you Clarify regularly?:

You guys know I’m always talking about clarifying your hair a priority in your routine. If prolonged dryness is an issue for your hair 99.9999% of the time product buildup & silicones are the culprit. 🕵🏽‍♀️

I love a good detox bentonite clay hair mask, but you know I loooove my products and I just had to try their ‘Squeaky’ clarifying shampoo.
1 word - BOMB💣!
Not only are they black owned (which is everything to me) their products are also free of mineral oils, parabens, sulfates, & phthalates .

This shampoo & conditioner combo had my hair feeling clean, hydrated, and easy to detangle. And since it’s still the winter season, I deep condition with ‘Heal & Renew’ every other wash.

HAIR OIL 💧:

IMO, oil is one of THE most misunderstood products in hair care. For years we have all been marketed products that claim to be ‘100% oil’...’organic’..’moisturizing/hydrating’ yet packed with silicones, toxic ingredients and even alcohol (yikes!)
In an effort to keep this post fairly short let me share a few tips about oil that can be helpful:

• Oil does NOT hydrate. I repeat it does NOT add any moisture to the hair! Oil is quite literally the exact opposite of water.
• Not all oil is created equal. The process of extraction is very important when choosing oils because this will determine its potency and effectiveness. Choose cold-pressed oils when purchasing.
•Look for added fillers and additional ingredients, especially silicones. These will build up on your hair overtime.

So now you’re probably wondering ‘Eek!When the heck do I use oil?’ :
•100% cold pressed oils that are suitable for your hair type & texture (not just any old oil) are incredible for adding nutritive fatty acids into hair to help keep it strong. It will also add shine✨
•If you heat style, you CAN use an oil with silicone as this will typically give your hair a bit of protection against heat exposure. Just be cautious not to use temperatures over 365F which is damaging for all hair types.
•If your hair is already dry, oil is not the answer. Hair will be even more dry after you apply it. Oil should only be applied to properly hydrated hair.( ie, right after the shower or freshly styled hair).

There’s a lot more I can add but let’s keep this caption at a reasonable length.

Let’s chat product storage —

As a professional I try SO MANY PRODUCTS that has left every drawer, cupboard and bathroom overflowing with so many bottles over the years. Maybe you may feel like you *need* all of these things but I can assure you that you do not. You know the expiration label on the back of makeup? It also applies to haircare. Overtime formulas separate, change colors and can even become moldy🤮.

If you need to decide whether to keep or toss something just turn it around and check the recommended time of use. If you’ve had it longer than that - toss that bad boy away.

And here’s a tip to get the momentum going;
What’s a better time to C L E A R O U T the clutter than mercury retrograde?

Hey guys!
Here’s a tutorial of how I did my recent jumbo twists. The style took about 3 1/2 hours which is significantly quicker than what it would take not using the rubber band method. I’m so glad I decided to film this even though I did it at home vs. the studio.

Would you attempt this on your own? Let me know in the comments below 👇🏽

Jumbo Braid Tutorial (sound ON🔈)

Hey all!
I wanted take you through a quick tutorial on how to add braiding hair on long hair (no bun method.)
While there are P L E N T Y of Jumbo braid tutorials, many of them require attaching hair to your bun which isn’t ideal for long hair. Realistically this style took me about 20 minutes to do and it’s fairly simple with a little bit of practice!💫

Would you try this look?
