Most leaders don’t have an accountability problem.

They have an expectation problem disguised as accountability.

In my latest Career View Mirror® conversation with leadership expert Dr. Karl Hebenstreit, we talked about something that quietly breaks teams every day:

People assuming everyone sees work the same way they do.

That assumption creates:
• burnout from unclear priorities
• resentment from unspoken expectations
• confusion disguised as “lack of performance.”

One thing Karl said really stuck with me:

“The Golden Rule only works if everyone is the same.”

And they’re not.

Different people are motivated differently.
Different people process differently.
Different people communicate differently.

Strong leadership isn’t about treating everyone the way *you* want to be treated.
It’s understanding what your people actually need to succeed.

Here’s the practical takeaway:
Before assuming someone is underperforming, ask yourself:
➡️ “Did I clearly communicate the expectation… or did I just assume they knew?”

That one question can change an entire workplace culture.

Stop waiting for opportunities to find you! 🚀

It's all about building relationships and SHOWING your value.
Your parents' work ethic is great, but this generation's hustle is DIFFERENT. Time to get seen! 👀

That was one of the biggest takeaways from my conversation with HR executive and author Ebony Russ on Career View Mirror®.

Here’s the truth:

• Hard work alone is not a career strategy
• Visibility matters just as much as capability
• The workplace rewards people who know how to navigate relationships, communication, and perception

One moment from our conversation really stayed with me:

Ebony talked about how many of us were raised to believe:
“If you work hard, people will notice.”

But today’s workplace often requires more than hard work.
It requires advocacy.
Strategy.
Emotional intelligence.
And yes… sometimes learning the game after stumbling through it first.

One practical takeaway:
Track your wins before you need them.

Keep a running list of:
→ projects you led
→ problems you solved
→ difficult conversations you navigated
→ measurable results you created

Because confidence is easier when the receipts already exist.

And remember:
Knowing your value is one thing.
Showing it is another.

“Work-life balance” isn’t about perfectly juggling everything.

It’s about having the courage to advocate for what you need before burnout makes the decision for you.

I had the opportunity to share my perspective on ABC News Live Weekend with Gio Benitez about the realities of work-life balance (I call it work-life flow), boundaries, and why so many professionals are quietly running on empty.

One thing I’ve learned after coaching thousands of leaders:

✨ Balance isn’t a destination.
✨ It’s a series of intentional choices.
✨ And sometimes the most productive thing you can do… is rest.
