100 Years of Innovation. One Unforgettable Day.
This past Sunday in Jamestown, NY was nothing short of incredible. Members of the Ehmke family, Ehmke Manufacturing Co. team (Philadelphia-based), and baseball fans from across the country gathered to celebrate the remarkable legacy of Howard Ehmke—MLB pitcher, 1929 World Series Game 1 hero, and the brilliant mind behind the invention of the infield tarp!
From the historic Robert H. Jackson Center to the Tarp Skunks game at Diethrick Park, the celebration honored not just a baseball legend, but a true American innovator. Howard Ehmke’s invention, first sold to the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Philadelphia A’s, and the University of Pennsylvania, transformed the game—ushering in a century of protection for America’s favorite pastime.
A special highlight: Acclaimed playwright Marc Isaacs unveiled a work-in-progress script based on Ehmke’s life, brought to life by talented local and regional actors.
And what a thrill to have retired MLB pitcher Tom Tellmann on hand to read a moving tribute from the Oakland A’s, recognizing Ehmke’s contribution to their storied history.
Despite a brief rain delay (what better time to roll out the tarp?!), the sun returned just in time for Bob Rosania, CEO of Ehmke Manufacturing Co., to throw out the first pitch. A perfect tribute on what is now officially “Howard Ehmke Day” in Chautauqua County—July 13, 2025.
From field tarps to defense manufacturing, Ehmke Manufacturing’s 100-year journey continues to reflect the spirit of American ingenuity.
A heartfelt thank you to Greg Peterson, Randy Anderson (CSHOF), Vince Martonis, David Niles, Marc Isaacs, and everyone who made this incredible day possible.
It's like Howard is woven into the fabric of baseball itself! Here’s to 100 years of legacy, innovation, and impact—and the future ahead.
